RUMOR OF TANFORAN SALE Latest Report States Movie Group Interested in Track Plans Said to Call for Dismantling of Old OldBuildings Buildings and Construction of ofNew New Ones f SAN MATEO Calif May 15 The rumors aherit the sale of the Tanforan race track Will not down and the latest report has it that the historic old course will be bought by a group of Hollywood picture people for a sum in the neighborhood of 1000000 and made into a mpderriplant as closely as pos ¬ sible resembling Santa Anita AnitaThe The old Tanforan track will be dismantled lock stock and barrel so the story goes and an entirely new grandstand clubhouse seats and other structures built It is pos ¬ sible that the track proper may be widened widenedJohn John W Marchbank and his assistants have spent much money in remodeling the old track since the legalization of pari mutuel wagering in the state They have en ¬ larged the grandstand and clubhouse re ¬ modeled the secretarys office and installed a new front entrance The group of pros ¬ pective purchasers are declared not to be satisfied with the course in its present con ¬ dition and if they buy it the plant will be given a general overhauling it is stated statedMr Mr Marchbank who is head of the Tan ¬ foran Company recently staled that he was not contemplating selling the track but inti ¬ mated that he might consider a suitable offer That offer was represented to have been made by a Hollywood group and it would not be surprising if a public announce ¬ ment regarding a change of ownership would be made before the San Francisco spring racing season closes closesFALL FALL OPENING NOV 20 20Should Should the track be sold the purchasers would have several months in which to rebuild Tanforan does not open its fall season until November 20 following the close of Bay Meadows By agreement Bay Meadows stages the first meeting in the Bay district this fall and next spring springTanforan Tanforan a carryover from the good old days of Bay area racing which included Emeryville Bay District and other noted tracks was the actual scene of the move ¬ ment which brought about the revival of racing in California Following a betless meeting staged by the late A B Spreckels a number of years ago Joseph A Murphy wellknown eastern racing official intro ¬ duced the option system at the old track Racing was held under the option system until parimutuel wagering was legalized in the state in 1933 John Marchbank present owner of the Tanforan track is the only one of the big three controlling the track during the option system remaining in the fold Of the other chief men Bill Kyne is operating the Bay Meadows track and judge Murphy is no longer connected with the western tracks
