to Jumping JumpingGood Good Field Likely in Illinois Derby Belmont Park moves into the second week of its meeting today with two of its impor ¬ tant events the Toboggan and Metropolitan Handicaps already decided but the best is yet to come Outstanding attraction of the week is the Withers which will be staged Saturday Run over the mile course the Withers long has been regarded as an impor ¬ tant qualifying test for the Belmont Stakes and numerous of its winners have gone on to account for the only American race pat ¬ terned closely after the English Derby This years Belmont winner however hardly will come out of the Withers field as practically all of the outstanding candidates for the mile and onehalf event were performers in the Freakness Saturday and it is very doubt ¬ ful if any of them will be asked to run back so soon over a distance that is threesix ¬ teenths shorter shorterThe The Withers this year shapes up as strictly a mile event for threeyearolds with the Belmont Stakes angle to be brought in after ward if the race happens to produce a prom ¬ ising candidate for the latter special Com ¬ ing out of the West for the Withers if plans do not go awry will be Case Ace from the Milky Way Farm stable The speedy son of Teddy and Sweetheart won a seven furlongs dash at Churchill Downs on opening day there and for a time he was considered as a Kentucky Derby starter but trainer Robert McGarvey decided it would be better to dodge the longer event and to point him for the Withers the distance being more to his liking Should he race back to his Churchill Downs effort Case Ace should take a lot of beating in the weekend attraction at Belmont Park He is not eligible for the Belmont BelmontBlack Black Look may prove to be the principal Belmont hope to come out of the Withers although he was unable to land in the money in the Toboggan In his first start of the season at Keeneland the son of Whichone raced in handy fashion but he stopped sud ¬ denly in a later event after holding a com ¬ fortable lead to the furlong post The C V Whitney colt was found to be suffering from a bronchial congestion and consequently no further attempt was made to get him ready for the Derby but trainer Thomas J Healcy was hopeful the trouble could be cleared up in time to send him into the Belmont in top trim Other eligibles to the Belmont which may be considered as likely starters are Charing Cross Melodist Count Atlas Old Nassau Royal Reigh Vamoose and the filly Royal Raiment The probable Withers field doesnt stack up as formidable as customary Azucar which quit being a capable steeplechaser to prove a more worthy cam ¬ paigner on the flat is to return to his former trade following the running of the Frontier Handicap 10000 added affair fea ¬ turing the Detroit meeting This informa ¬ tion is forthcoming from Fred M Alger Jr who purchased the Irishbred gelding by Continued on twentieth page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page Milesius from Clarice by Picton from Jos E Widener as a jumper but the horse dis ¬ played so much speed on the flat in his training that it was decided to try him in flat events As long as he lives Alger will never regret the move regardless of how well Azucar does once more through the field Azucars principal triumph was in the first running of the 100000 Santa Anita Handicap but he accounted for many other stakes including a couple last year Age finally has taken its toll and Azucar has not quite as much lick as he formerly pos ¬ sessed but he may be far from being through at nine years of age as a steeplechaser Auroras best meeting will be brought to a close Saturday with the renewal of the Illinois Derby which with 12000 in added money promises to attract a worthy field including Reaping Reward which finished third in the Kentucky Derby Among the Sickle colts opponents may be the sensa ¬ tionally fast Heelfly which forced the Ken ¬ tucky Derby pace during the opening three quarters If able to get out in front the Three Ds Stock Farm colt may be hard to run down in the mile and oneeighth affair Burning Star and Military the latter a stablemate of Reaping Reward are other Kentucky Derby starters which are distinct possibilities for the Aurora feature while some member of Mrs Emil Denemarks string just shipped to Washington Park may go postward With fine weather the Illinois Derby should draw the largest crowd in Auroras history
