ABANDON AUSTRALIAN GAU Joseph E Widener Orders Tempo ¬ rary Suspension of Antipodean Barrier Still Favors It NEW YORK NY May 15 Joseph E Widener president of the Westch ester Rac ¬ ing Association has notified Marshall Cas sidy steward for the New York State Rac ¬ ing Commission that he will suspend tem ¬ porarily the use of the Australian barrier at Belmont Park In doing so Mr Widener hopes the public will come to realize at some future time the success of this gate in all foreign countries for the past fifteen or more years He particularly calls attention to the one thing shocking to all foreign visitors who come to this country that of seeing the starts out of what they call dog boxes necessitating the manhandling of horses so seriously objected to a thought which coin ¬ cides with Mr Wideners own personal feelings feelingsMr Mr Widener is taking this action to com ¬ ply with the wishes of the public and horse ¬ men who he always has been anxious to please He hopes that the future will con ¬ vince those anxious for a better system of starting and that they will demand the change from stalls to some other method The method that is used successfully in all other countries where racing is conducted should be used
