May 15 Snark the son of Boojum and Helvetia which races for the Wheatley Stable of Mrs H C Phipps and her brother Ogden Mills was a sensa ¬ tional winner of the famous Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park today Back of him were Memory Book from the Greentree Stable and at his heels Hal Price Headleys Whopper barjely saved third from the Mae mere Farm Stables Maeriel It was the fortyfourth running of the coveted old prize and carried a net value of 6675 to the winner winnerThe The Metropolitan with the International Steeplechase and the Fashion Stakes for juvenile fillies made it a day of holiday sport that attracted an immense crowd to the magnificent Nassau County course de ¬ spite the fact that the weather was disagree ¬ ably cold and clouds hung over the park all afternoon afternoonHOLD HOLD WORLDS RECORD RECORDIt It was during the Hialeah racing in Flor ¬ ida that Snark established a world record of 115 for the six and a half furlongs He went slightly amiss after that sensational dash but showed a return to form when he was second in the Toboggan Handicap the opening day of the Westchester Asso ¬ ciation season In this race Bill Farnsworth was the one to set a fast pace from the stalls and he was attended by Sgt Byrne and Whopper with Count Arthur in fourth place and Snark well back of the son of Reigh Count Memory Book and Maeriel were in the rear rearNever Never shortening his stride Bill Farns ¬ worth continued to show the way and Sgt Byrne hung to him as they reached the half in 47 At that stage of the running Whop ¬ per was moving so strongly back of them he looked all over a winner but Snark was at the heels of the son of Pharamond IE and also racing easily easilyWhen When the stretch was reached Bill Farns ¬ worth tired and for an instant Sgt Snark The son of Boojum ranged along ¬ side Whopper to put him away and racing straight and true came on to score by a length and a half halfMEMORY MEMORY BOOK SECOND SECONDIn In the meantime Memory Book was run ¬ ning over the others after being so badly outrun in the early stages and going in bet ¬ ter style than the winner he took the place from Whopper by a length Maeriel finished with courage to be only another length away and Sgt Byrne had lasted longer than Bill Farnsworth to be fifth fifthThe The time for the running was 137 which was excellent considering the condition of the going from recent rains rainsCatalysis Catalysis the juvenile daughter of Stim ¬ ulus and Catalpa which races for E J Ben ¬ jamins Starmount Stable scored in the four and a half furlongs of the Fashion Stakes leading home A H Watermans Miyako Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sun Flo and John Hay Whitneys Rare Bloom three that fin ¬ ished closely lapped back of her This filly was seasoned with Florida racing and the Fashion was by long odds her best race and it added 5075 to her earnings earningsThis This race was marred by an unfortunate accident when J M Roeblings Invoke when making a determined move on the inside swerved into the inner rail and Balaski was unseated He held to the lines for a time and then dropped to the track badly shaken up but in no other way injured injuredSUCCESSFUL SUCCESSFUL DEBUT DEBUTThomas Thomas Hitchcocks Rioter made his first appearance of the year in the International Steeplechase Handicap and won all the way from F Ambrose Clarks Birmingham with Mrs Gwladys Whitneys Rhadamanthus tak ¬ ing third from H E Talbott Jrs Ship Ex ¬ ecutive while the Greentree Stables Jungle King was the only other starter starterLast Last year Rioter was only second to Joseph E Wideners Bushranger and was winner in eight out of ten starts finishing second to Bushranger on the two other oc ¬ casions casionsIn In his first effort this year he was under the top weight of 159 pounds and he proved himself the same steadygoing safe jumper he was last year Scott permitted the son of Reflector to go to the front shortly after the break and there was no stage of the running he surrendered the lead leadStar Star Shadow ran one of his best races when he was winner of the Friar Rock Handicap over the mile and a sixteenth route for the Silver State Stable Mrs J Hertz Our Reigh took second place with C V Whitneys Piccolo saving third from Buckley M Byers Thorson the only other starter and recent winner of the Excelsior Handicap HandicapFrom From a good start Our Reigh and Thor ¬ son raced away from the other two and as Mrs Hertz gelding was showing the way Arcaro had Thorson under a snug restraint back of him with Piccolo and Star Shadow racing at the heels of the pair pairIt It was going to the stretch turn that Shultz made his move with Star Shadow and racing around he was soon alongside Our Reigh The pair hung together for a few strides when Star Shadow took command and coming on readily his margin of victory was two and a half lengths Thorson had quit badly when Arcaro let him down and Piccolo readily raced by him to finish at the heels of Our Reigh to take third thirdThe The sixth was at four and a half furlongs through the Widener course that engaged juvenile colts and geldings and it brought out a big field of rather promising young thoroughbreds This saw the silks of C V Whitney first and second when Dauber a son of Pennant and Ship of War won rather handily and The Chief also a Pennant son and from Transit took theplace from Victor Emanuels Easter Holiday The Whitney team was at all times favorite of the dash A photograph revealed that Sun Alexandria was fourth
