Whopper Victor in 5OOO Stake at Detroit Fair Grounds DETROIT Mich May 31 Whopper oversized son of Pharamond II which races for Hal Price Headley Kentucky breeder and president of Keeneland won his third stake of the year and added 4120 to the coffers of his owner when he scored in the fourth running of the Col Alger Memorial Handicap which topped an attractive pro ¬ gram offered before 20000 patrons at the i Fair Grounds course of the Detroit Racing Association this afternoon afternoonUnder Under Lee Hardy Whopper which turned back a splendid field in the Pontchartrain Handicap here last year as well as the Philadelphia Handicap this spring set his own pace under the crushing impost of 126 pounds and led Fred M Algers Azucar by a half length at the end of one mile and onesixteenth onesixteenthGyral Gyral furnished by T D Buhl like Alger also a local sportsman and coupled with Couleedam which trailed the small field of nine at the end was third three lengths back of Azucar and two lengths before Stocks which saved fourth from Cristate Brendard Sir Jim James Professor Paul and Couleedam CouleedamWHOPPER WHOPPER TAKES LEAD LEADBeginning Beginning from the extreme outside post position after being the cause of a short delay Whopper went into the lead on the lower turn and although he did not attain a clear advantage until reaching the back stretch he was under strong restraint and always master of his opponents Near the final threeeighths Gyral moved up on the inside to be within striking distance as the pack approached the stretch but Wholey was bringing Azucar up fast and he went into second position a furlong from the finish finishWholey Wholey sent Azucar to the inside in the final sixteenth when Whopper was inclined to bear out and but for his unruly tactics Whopper probably would have been an easy winner Brendard was a factor for five eighths but dropped back thereafter and Cristate which was lucky to find room when racing forward tired in the last furlong Whopper furlongWhopper a 11 to 10 choice ran the dis ¬ tance in 145 145Long Long before the running of the first race every available seat in the grandstand was occupied and the bleacher section was packed soon afterwards The compact club ¬ house enclosure was overflowing and the re ¬ maining reserved seats were soon gobbled up Detroit is a fiveaday week town and the management did Cuban owner and ridden by J Marrero Cuban jockey was a popular and driving winner of the first race at six furlongs Hip Boots which reached the lead approaching the final fur ¬ long was second a half length back of the victor and two lengths before Dixie Fox which held a prominent position through ¬ out outPROVIDES PROVIDES MILD SURPRISE SURPRISEParadox Paradox Girl furnished by Mrs H Datt ner Detroit owner provided a mild surprise when she was a driving winner of the sec ¬ ond race at one mile and seventy yards and for which Belleek which finished fifth was a well backed choice Second went to the lightly regarded I Novotny which led the field of lowly platers to the final furlong and Rockrim got up to head Bosopi for minor honors honorsCompleting Completing a double for J Marrero and never far back Hair Trigger a well sup ¬ ported second choice showed the way to the far turn The winner steadily wore down I Novotny and benefited when the latter swung wide on the stretch turn and took command in the last stages to be a neck before him at the finish Belleek which reached third position near the final three furlongs gave way fast in the last stages stagesQue Que Gato Idle Hour bred daughter of Blue Larkspur which races for E W Duffy local owner provided the second popular victory of the day when she turned back Wise Dora Just High and nine others at the end of six furlongs in the third race raceLUXURO LUXURO DISAPPOINTS DISAPPOINTSUnder Under Joe Rosen and in closest pursuit of Just High after the opening sixteenth the j winner drove to the front approaching the final furlong to be threequarters of a length before the fast finishing Wise Dora and a length before Levi Cooke which beat the tiring Come Home by a head for fourth laurels Luxuro one of the choices was always far back and showed little littleEleven Eleven threeyearold maidens furnished the sport for the fourth race and it resulted in a popular victory when Noble Boy an ¬ other locallyowned performer carried the Bomar Stable colors to a handy victory Texas Rose was second and Sweep Boy was third Tombo Tuck the second choice which began from outside of the stalls was well beaten at the end of six
