FEATURE TO DORA MAY Rockhome Stable Miss Wins Me ¬ morial Day Handicap at Latonia Defeats Squaw Lady by Three ThreeLengths Lengths Winning With Speed in inReserve Reserve Chigre Third LATONIA Ky May 31 Under a blazing sun that produced a stifling heat close to 15000 spectators filled the clubhouse and grandstand and overflowed onto the lawn to view the presentation of the Memorial Day program of eight races at the Latonia course thereby establishing a record at ¬ tendance for the 1937 spring meeting at the popular old track trackIt It was a jovial and enthusiastic gathering that witnessed the stirring brand of thor ¬ oughbred competition All of the races ex ¬ cept the second and third events which constituted the Daily Double combination brought together small fields with the fea ¬ tured Memorial Day Handicap six furlongs event occupying sixth position holding one of the smallest fields of the day only six engaging engagingWhen When the field straightened away in the stretch Roberts called on his mount and she readily responded Then Squaw Lady which had been in the ruck for the greater portion of the race came with a sparkling burst of speed and wedging between Chigre and Manners Man fought her way up to sec ¬ ond place The winner was not entirely overlooked in the wagering though the bulk of support was concentrated on Man ¬ ners Man ManFAST FAST SEX FURLONGS FURLONGSRunning Running the fastest threequarters of the meeting the Rockhome Stables fouryear old bay filly Dora May easily accounted for the headliner scoring by three lengths over F P Letelliers Squaw Lady and completed the six furlongs in 111 Chigre flying the silks 9f C Hamilton Applegate finished third while the strongly backed Manners Man was fourth and came out of the en ¬ gagement limping limpingThat That Dora May had the speed to outrun her rivals was never questioned but some were in doubt as to how long the daughter of Republic would hold on should she be challenged challengedThe The challenge never came for Dora May pulled away from her rivals as she rounded Continued on thirtyeighth page FEATURE TO DORA MAY Continued from first page jthe stretch turn and never left the result in doubt doubtManners Manners Man struggled courageously to get up with the flying pacemaker the first half mile but the effort was in vain for Dora May under her impost of 106 pounds was at her best bestHANKAS HANKAS GOOD BIDE BIDEMaiden Maiden twoyearold fillies engaged in a sprint of five furlongs to begin the festivi ¬ ties and Barbara S alertly ridden by Willie Hanka took the major portion of the purse for W J Sprow Cleveland sportsman The 1 bay fillys margin of victory was a length and a half over Deft while Wall came from the rear to be third in a whirlwind finish Barbara S was backed into favoritism and the daughter of Jock Fontanelle was on the front end all the way disposing of Polly PollyiGreenock iGreenock and Kitty Baker reaching the thefinal final furlong furlongA A close finish enlivened matters in the sec ¬ ond race a dash of six furlongs in which a capacity field of twelve platers matched matchedStrides Strides and C W Caldwells Ripplealong gained a head verdict over Rettef in a hard stretch drive Squads Right was a length and a half further back in third place while the favored Pierre Andre could do no better than fifth fifthLONG LONG DELAY AT POST POSTFormer Former jockey Bert Kennedy sent the winner of the third race postward in Mo andmo which trounced eleven other three yearolds over a mile and seventy yards Glassy Eye finished second and the heavily backed choice Atina drew up in third posi ¬ tion There was a delay of ten minutes at the post caused by Atina and Glassy Eye I resulting in the former being placed outside the starting apparatus Moandmo was I rushed into the lead before the first turn was reached and remained on the front end throughout crossing the finish mark two and a half lengths in advance of Glassy Eye J W Red Wilson rode his first winner before a gathering of his hometown folk when he guided C N Finchs Barbara J to a neck victory in the fourth race a mile land a sixteenth affair in which six com ¬ peted Just Frank finished second a neck behind the winner while Vitamin B landed in third place From start to finish it was Barbara J Just Frank and Vitamin B and the platers furnished a thrilling spec ¬ tacle as they fought for the lead in the run through the stretch stretchEight Eight good threeyearolds met in the fifth the Maple Avenue Claiming Purse over six furlongs and Alice Highland from the stable of Mrs H C Ragan proved an easy winner scoring by the comfortable margin of five lengths after having led all of the way John Allen was second and Black Arrow third Alice Highland pos ¬ sessed the most speed immediately opening up a sizeable lead and held sway for the entire distance
