FAIR GROUNDS BETTING ORAL Louisiana Jockey Club Considering ConsideringMaking Making Change in Wagering WageringMethod Method for Next Winter NEW ORLEANS La May 31 According to reports in business and sporting circles here the Louisiana Jockey Club is seriously considering the adoption of the oral system of wagering at the Fair Grounds track here next winter Robert S Eddy Jr active head of the local track is understood to be in New York at this time for the purpose of obtaining the reactions of the countrys lead ¬ ing betting commissioners as to whether they would be interested in coming here to operate next winter Whether this is true could not be confirmed but it is known that this change in betting policy at the Fair Grounds has been seriously considered It was under this form of betting that racing reached its greatest heights in New Orleans OrleansAt At the same time it is learned from sources close to the Fair Grounds operators that a group of prominent local business men are likely to acquire a financial interest in the racing plant and if so would be active in out ¬ lining its future polcy Col Seymour Weiss president of the Roosevelt Hotel Company and nationally prominent in Democratic pol ¬ itics has been mentioned frequently in these parts partsColonel Colonel Weiss and Mayor Robert S Mae ¬ stri who has financial interest in the Fair Grounds and other business and civic lead ¬ ers are behind a drive to make New Orleans as attractive to winter tourists as other southern resorts where racing is one of the bigger attractions It is understood that they feel that the open form of oral betting would be a boon to the sport here and consequently helpful to the city Colonel Weiss has the support of other leading hotel operators here
