Here and There on the Turf i j i iXalapa Xalapa Clown Still Untested j Seems Good Prospect for 1939 Esposa Extends Her Record Bull Lea Bargain Yearling Just how good is Xalapa Clown is a ques ¬ tion being asked the experts by the average fan and by one another The black son of Eternal and Loma Linda by My Play for which a fancy price has been refused on sev ¬ eral occasions continues unbeaten and until he tastes defeat probably his true standing will be difficult to gauge So far he has not clashed with the established topnotchers of the twoyearold division because he lacked the necessary engagements but otherwise hes done everything asked of him and has demonstrated the improvement born of de ¬ velopment After winning a pair of sprints one for maidens at five furlongs and the second at six furlongs over colts considered promising like himself Xalapa Clown was sent after the Ardsley Handicap of a mile and seventy yards in which he carried 122 pounds and was starting top weight with Lovely Night NightIn In winning the Ardsley by a length and onehalf over the steadily closing Ciencia Xalapa Clown ran the distance in 145 which is three seconds off the track record In the following event the Yorktown Handicap Great Union carrying 107 pounds required 152 to run the mile and a furlong or a sec ¬ ond off the track record so from a time standpoint Xalapa Clowns effort was not impressive but the manner in which he turned back his opponents was clever enough as he was willing to be rated within striking distance of the pacemaker and went to the front when ready Xalapa Clown hasnt much chance remaining this season to show just how good he is but his connections may feel satisfied he has done enough to justify himself as a fine three yearold prospect prospectEsposas Esposas appearance in the Yorktown Handicap marked the eightyeighth time this Ironsinewed mare has gone to the post in her five seasons of campaigning and al ¬ though the daughter of Espino and Quick Continued on twentysecond page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page Batter by Runantell hasnt been quite as successful this year as last her record has been good enough to cause many observers to consider her the best of her sex She was only beaten a head by Great Union in the Yorktown after suffering interference from that colt and despite the fact she was bur ¬ dened with 124 pounds The season isnt quite over for Esposa however and before the curtain drops she may have improved on her 1937 record in which she earned 51290 Her 51290Her collections so far this season have been 40575 although she has won only three stakes as against eight the previous year Three of her 1937 triumphs came later than howeverAs this moment of the campaign however As a fiveyearold Esposa made five starts at Saratoga and won all but the Saratoga Cup her triumphs including the Wilson and Whitney weightforage events and the Saratoga Handicap She tried for all four of these events this past summer but War Ad ¬ miral was in them too and she had to be content with something less than first honors But in winning the Butler and Champlain Handicaps and Hawthorne Gold Cup as well as getting some part of the money In other starts William Zieglers good mare has compiled a respectable total of earnings which may be considerably en ¬ hanced before the end of the season So far the distanceloving daughter or Espino has earned in excess of 130000 and whether or not she will be asked to race further after this season is uncertain but she exhibits no signs of wearing out Esposa has compiled a most enviable record recordWhen When all is said and done Bull Lea will have left no question but what he was a bargain yearling at 14000 although he got only 7300 of his purchase price back as a twoyearold The son of Bull Dog and Rose Leaves by Ballot has been campaigned right along through the season with the ex ¬ ception of a layoff from the Preakness until just before the Arlington Classic and so far hes earned 36650 which is a sizeable sum in itself He failed to capture any of the more important threeyearold stakes be ¬ cause he wasnt quite there as a distance runner but that couldnt be found out unless by competition At the middle distance he was more formidable and had he been re ¬ served for them Bull Lea probably would have compiled a better record of winnings than he now enjoys Just the same he wasnt many pounds below the best in the three yearold division at any distance
