STANDS ALONE PAYS PRICE Accounts for Hephaistos Handicap at Empire City at 12 to 1 Track Slow From Recent Bains Yarberry YarberryContinues Continues to Display Brilliant Form FormIn In the Saddle EMPIRE CITY N Y Oct 25 Stands Alone neglected in the betting at 12 to 1 was winner of the Hephaistos Handicap at the Hill Top course of the Empire City As ¬ sociation today It was a gallop of a mile and a sixteenth for those of class D and the finish was a sensational one when Johnny Longden brought the winner up on the extreme outside in the final furlong to win over Mrs W Plunkett Stewarts Milky Punch another long shot Third was the portion of Billy Van Nuys which raced for William H Gallagher and he was one of the choices choicesThe The track was slow from the recent rains though it had dried out Considerably with only a deep strip along the inner rail The bright sunshine brought out a big crowd but favorites were anything but dependable dependableThe The start was a bit ragged in the feature and Be Quaint was first to show from the stalls Milk Punch also left fast and then followed Our Ketcham and Billy Van Nuys Hunting Home was one of the unfortunates and Stands Alone the winner was also slow to leave the gate gateBARBA BARBA ALERT ALERTGoing Going into the backstretch Barba slipped through on the inside to go into the lead with Billy Van Nuys but Milk Punch went right along with him and the pair soon opened up a lead of daylight on the rest of the field with Be Quaint racing in third place but doing his best to hold his position positionIt It was on the turn from the backstretch that Encore joined the contention when he went up on the inside but Billy Van Nuys was holding his lead and Milk Punch was still secure in second place On the stretch turn Renick chose the inside with Encore and the handicap of the deep going cooked his chances There for a few strides Milk Punch was showing in front of Billy Van Nuys NuysThese These were fighting it out when Stands Alone which was racing fourth a furlong from the finish came with his winning rush on the outside where he enjoyed the firm footing He swept past to be winner by a length and a half while Milk Punch had outgamed Billy Van Nuys to beat him a neck for the place Encore was a close fourth while both Hunting Home and En ¬ chanted both recent winners performed dis ¬ mally and were soundly beaten beatenSURPRISE SURPRISE WINNER WINNERThe The Thornwood Purse a sprint of five and threequarter furlongs brought a surprise when M Van Beurens Pixey Dell the long ¬ est shot of the field earned a close decision over J S Rileys Soigne with Warren Wrights Count Morse an exceedingly close third Soigne only saved the place by a nose from Count Morse while Jewell Dor sett was fourth though taken through the deep going in the stretch Early Autumn was last of the six that performed performedJimmy Jimmy Stout who had the mount on the Van Beuren filly was completing a double for he had won with War Dog in the second race raceClarence Clarence Buxtons Audley Girl showing improved form over her recent races was winner from a field of maidens that came together in the five and threequarters fur ¬ longs of the opening race She was first by two lengths over Robert L Gerrys Shim ¬ mering which in turn only saved the place by a head from Man at Arms and Charming Herod was fourth fourthMAIDEN MAIDEN AFFAIR AFFAIRThe The second race was also for maidens and at five and threequarters furlongs but it was confined to the juveniles It proved easy for War Dog from the Falaise Stable when after breaking well he dashed into i a long lead and there was no time he was i in any danger of being beaten R V Boyles i Golden Voyage was second virtually all the i way to save that part of the purse by half a dozen lengths from Gallant Neb NebAlessano Alessano was winner of the third event at a mile and seventy yards for juveniles but there was an element of luck in the victory when Never Right the favorite had I no chance at the break He was virtually left at the post and when he reached fourth i place at the finish he had run a winning race The place in this went to Spanish L Dot which races for Raymond A Breton and she raced to that position when she ran i down High Blame
