BATTLE OF THE MIGHTY MITES Great Contest Staged by Longden and Adams for American Riding Championship of Current Year. SAN BRUNO, Calif., Dec. 10 Eleven more West Coast racing days to go and jockey Johnny Longden and "Shorty" Adams are going to take full advantage of every one of them. The pair of sawed-off riders now battling it out for the American riding championship along the Western front will ride five more days at Tanforan, a Saturday, three Sundays and Monday, December 26 at Agua Caliente and opening day at Santa Anita. Going into Saturdays card at Tanforan, Longden topped Adams by fourteen winning mounts. The score was Longden 219, Adams 205. Therefore Adams must pilot an average of more than one more winner a day than his rival to taken down the American jockey honors for the second year in succession. From what they have shown at Tanforan, Adams is the better rider of the two. He and the Canadian have shown about the equal amount of timidity when caught on the inside with horses but Adams seems to be the better judge of pace and finishes just as strongly. Personally, choice of mounts and all things taken into consideration, we believe that Silvio Coucci, Ralph Neves, Carl Bierman and Martin Fallon have shown to better advantage at Tanforan than either Longden or Adams. The two leaders generally have choice mounts and have been beaten on a number of short priced horses.
