CANAL ZONE ESPIONAGE TRIAL CRISTOBAL, C. Z., Dec. 10. The government today closed its case in the trial of Hans Heinrich Schakow, one of four Germans held in the Canal Zone on espionage charges and the first to be tried. Defense counsel immediately asked for dismissal of. the charges and a directed verdict of not guilty but it was indicated that Judge Gardner would deny the motion and order the trial to proceed. P. C. Fairman, Schakows attorney in moving for dismissal argued that no injury had resulted to the United States Government from photographs taken by the defendant along the Panama Canal.
