GOODWOOD MEETING OPENS THIS AFTERNOON Special Cablegram CablegramNEWMARKET NEWMARKET England July 24 The annual fourday race meeting at glorious Goodwood over the privatelyowned course of the Duke of Richmond and Gordon on his Sussex estate opens tomorrow This his ¬ toric fixture dates back to 1802 when the first meeting on Trundle Hill was held heldThrough Through the years7 until the postwar years Goodwood was the most exclusive of all English meetings It is only in recent seasons since the advent of the automobile that the annual fixture on Trundle Hill has become generally popular Glorious Good ¬ wood has a fascination all its own apart from the highclass racing now provided there therePrizes Prizes worth almost 160000 including the values of cup and trophies will be disbursed to winners of the twentyfour races Two of the most valuable stakes of the fourday meeting are carded on the opening program the Gratwicke Stakes with a gross value of 17000 at one mile and a half for three yearolds and the oddlynamed Ham Pro duce Stakes worth 15000 at six furlongs for twoyearolds But chief interest in the initial days program will be the sprint handicap the Stewards Cup at six furlongs for threeyearolds and upward upwardThat That the Cup has lost none of its prestige is indicated by the fact that there were fifty seven nominations for the race of which thirtyfour are still eligible to go postward tie usual big field is assured
