MANY ESPIONAGE CASES WASHINGTON D C July 24 A record breaking number of espionage cases for a peace time year were handled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation during the twelve months ending June 30 Chief J Edgar Hoover reported today A total of 1651 new spy cases were received by the F B I during the year an increase of 1401 over the pre ¬ vious twelve months Normally the govern ¬ ment investigates an average of only thirty five espionage cases each year The bureau gave no details about the cases nor would it comment on the espionage activity of any individual foreign power
