HAWTHORNE GOLD CUP To Be Renewed and Run at Cicero Track on September 16 Popular Fixture to Have 15000 15000Added Added and Handsome Cup Other OtherFeatures Features to Be Announced Later The Hawthorne Gold Cup will again fea ¬ ture the twentyfourday meeting at the popular west side track At a special meet ¬ ing of the executive committee of the Haw ¬ thorne race track composed of President Charles Krutckoff chairman of the board Charles W Bidwill and vicepresident Joseph A Murphy it was decided to hold the Gold Cup as usual for the 1939 meeting The stake which will be a handicap affair will have an added value of 15000 and a gold cup the design of the token being approved and ordered at Mondays meeting meetingThe The big race will be run on Saturday September 16 The Hawthorne meeting is scheduled to open on Labor Day Monday September 4 and close Saturday Septem ¬ ber 30 In addition there will be a program of other stake races which will be approved by the executive committee within the next few days and will then be released to horse ¬ men secretary Julius Reeder being instructed to draw up the first weeks condition book bookWONDERFUL WONDERFUL BACKGROUND BACKGROUNDThe The Hawthorne Gold Cup has a wonderful background and its history is linked with the performances of some of Americas greatest race horses It was established as a weight forage race but was changed to a handicap three years ago agoThe The first Gold Cup was won by Display in 1928 and behind him were such sterling performers as Crusader Mike Hall Sun Beau Misstep and others Tn successive years from that time on it was won by the record moneyearner Sun Beau which took the Cup as a four five and sixyearold Plucky Play won the big race in 1932 and the great Equipoise was first under the wire in 1933 Discovery was the victor in 1935 The race was discontinued in 1931 and 1936 but was resumed in 1937 when Sahri II won Last year Esposa was the winner The dis ¬ tance is one mile and a quarter quarterMany Many inquiries have been received in re ¬ spect to the program which Hawthorne will offer The stakes and purses will be up to the standard of previous years and many of the stables now racing in Chicago and quite a few from California will remain here for the meeting
