STANDSALONEBYANOSE Defeats Favored Robert L in Main Event at Arlington Park Simpson Colorbearer Runs Mile and andan an Eighth in 150 Numerous NumerousSurprises Surprises for Large Crowd ARLINGTON HEIGHTS 111 July 24 W B Simpsons Stands Alone making his first start since he was seen under colors at Bay Meadows in May sprung one of a num ¬ ber of surprises at Arlington Park this after ¬ noon when he accounted for the Lockport Purse a run of a mile and a furlong which served as one of the programs features With Irving Anderson at the reins Stands Alone won by a nose as Robert L the fa voritej ran second and Burning Star third The latter finished a length and a quarter behind the runnerup and a nose before Eagle Pass PassRobert Robert L was the fifth straight favorite to meet defeat in as big a day of upsets as Arlington Park has seen this summer summerHer Her Reigh made the pace a slow one and Robert L forced it while all the others were being rated not far behind Never more than a few lengths separated the first and the last horses the first threequarters of the I race and as the field turned into the home stretch the victor might have been any anySTANDS STANDS ALONE HELD AT 6 TO 1 1Her Her Reigh surrendered the lead to Robert L on the stretch turn and then dropped back fast but Robert L fought on to the finish Stands Alone held at odds of a little more than 6 to 1 collared Robert L about a six ¬ teenth from the wire and then outfinished him to be awarded the decision Eagle Pass on the inside throughout moved up boldly entering the stretch but seemed to hang a bit near the finish and was nosed out in the closing strides for third money which Burning Star earned by coming from last place in the final quarter Anthology was the only other starter and in finishing fifth was only a length behind Eagle Pass PassThe The race was unusually run for after the first threequarters were run in no better time than 115 on a fast track Stands Alone closely approached the track record in com Continued on thirtyfourth page STANDS ALONEBYANOSE Continued from first page pleting the nine furlongs in 150 The rec ¬ ord is 149 149LARGE LARGE GATHERING GATHERINGThe The crowd augmented by many women who were guests of the management on another of its Ladies Days closely ap ¬ proached 20000 persons the largest turn ¬ out Saturdays and holidays excepted since the opening Much thrilling sport was of ¬ fered and the weather was ideal idealHayden Hayden Dupuy whose contract was pur ¬ chased last week by the Calumet Farm rode his first winner for that stable when he guided Easy Mon to victory in the seven furlongs Blue Island Purse another of the days better numbers Shouldering only 100 pounds Easy Mon ran the seveneighths in 123 and won by a length and a half Tiger which shared favoritism with the win ¬ ner was second and Journey On third thirdTiger Tiger trying for his third straight win was sent out to make the pace but under his impost of 115 pounds he could not stall off the Calumet colt which forged to the front approaching the final furlong Easy Mon bore out all through the stretch but had no difficulty holding his advantage once he got to the front In taking the place Tiger beat Journey On by a neck Sun Plume was fourth in a field that also included Isaroma and CoSport CoSportIsaroma Isaroma unbeaten in his only five engage ¬ ments was returning to competition after an absence of more than a year and a half He failed to threaten threatenOUTSIDERS OUTSIDERS SCORE SCOREOutsiders Outsiders got all the money in the six fur ¬ longs opener The winner was Drift On owned by Cox Ketcham and handled by Robert Haber while Chispa ran second and Fluke third Showing considerable improve ¬ ment Drift On broke in front and led every stride of the way leading her nearest rival across the line of finish by two lengths At one time she was as many as five lengths in front Ducmiss the favorite was closest to the winner for a half mile but then wearied of the hopeless task of trying to catch Drift On Ducmiss wound up fourth Drift On paid a little more than 12 to 1 in the mutuels while the place return for 2 on Chispa was 19620 19620L L A Moseleys CarRou another lightly regarded in the betting graduated from the maiden ranks when she turned back eleven other twoyearolds in the second race a dash at five and onehalf furlongs The daughter of Carlaris withstood a sharp drive at the hands of Charles Kurtsinger to get the decision by a neck as Dutch Dame beat Hadith a little less than a length for second place Dutch Dame took the lead from Res ¬ cued on the turn and then held sway until CarRou came along in the closing strides to receive the nod of the judges
