named in honor of the winner of the inaugural running of the Dixie Handicap in 1870 at the Maryland Jt k kj j Clubs Pimlico track The first edition of this threeyearold classic was run in 1873 two years prior to Aristides triumph in the initial Kentucky Derby This fixtui h s steadily grown in monetary value and popularity until now it completes with the Derby andJJelmont Americas Triple Crown The Preakness has been run or v vrious distances it being run at one and onehalf miles prior to 1889 one and onequarter miles in 1889 one mile in 1909 and 1910 one and oneeighth miles from 19 1 1924 ir uive and one and threesixteenths miles since It was run in two divisions in 1918 with War Cloudv and Jack Hare Jr being returned the winners Tne P akntjs was not run between 1889 and 1909 Sir Barton Gallant Fox Burgoo King Omaha Bold Venture War Admiral and Whirlaway annexed the Preakness a w 11 ts hc coveted Blue Grass fixture Only five went on later to score in the Belmont Stakes as well to complete the American Triple Crown these being fr i rtop in 1919 Gallant Fox king of the threeyearolds in 1930 Omaha also owned by William Woodward who performed the feat in 1935 War Admiral outstanj nu ber of the threeyearold division in 1937 and Whirlaway who swept all before him during the 1941 season to earn the Horse of the Year title for that yeav Tre following abulation shows the
