Proposal to Aid Thoroughbred Breeder Applauded ApplaudedIn In reference to your recent editorial advocating that something be done to aid the breeders here is a point which in my mind illustrates the case very clearly At Saratoga a colt was sold by Great Run Stud for 100 He was by Quatre Bras n Lucilla by Pompey The service fee was 500 In addition the breeder was burdened with the upkeep of the mare when she was carrying the foal and the foal after weaning He was a small individual but very neat and clean While he should not have brought any big price his value certainly should have been more than 100 Had he been deformed or suffered from some other malignancy to which horse men take exception I would readily agree he was not worth more than a century note On April 21 the same little colt now named Robert T won a maiden claiming race entered for 1500 1500Now Now if the breeder got two per cent of the purse he would still have an interest in the colt and it would further give the breeder an opportunity to get back some of his original investment in the colt unfavorably received on the yearling block blockAs As I see it if a yearling is not worth more than 100 he should not be sold for more than 100 but if a yearling is sold for a ridiculously low sum and turns out to be another Alsab the breeder should be rewarded which to my way of thinking is just as it should be beI I am convinced your suggestion has a great deal of merit I know it will meet with the full approval of all breeders I sincerely hope the racing associations will fall into line They should remember that they owe something to the breeder particularly the small breeder who does not obtain large sums for his yearlings I believe it would stimulate the breeding industry in general if breeders were to get an award for races won It would be a simple matter for the associations to turn in the percentage to The Jockey Club which could turn it over to the breeder breederA A G C Middleburg Va
