Defense Tops Big Bonner Stable at Detroit Track TrackMany Many Other Prominent Racers Are Under Care of Trainer Hernandez HernandezDETROIT DETROIT Mich May 10 Mrs HP Bonner whose stable was the leading money earning establishment here last year has another large force of thoroughbreds to rep ¬ resent her during the 73day meeting of the Detroit Racing Association opening at the local Fair Grounds track on May 22 The horses have been here several weeks in charge of Norman B Hernandez and hav ¬ ing been freshened after a vigorous winter campaign in New Orleans will be ready again for competition with the opening of the Motor City season seasonIn In place of the illfated Heartman who died during the winter the Bonner stable this year has the handicap performer De ¬ fense purchased early in the year from Norman W Church If Defense can match Heartmans accomplishments of a year ago he is going to be one of the outstanding stars of the Detroit meeting Heartman earned 26350 last year a considerable por ¬ tion of it in Detroit where among his at ¬ tainments he accounted for the Ann Arbor Handicap and the Joseph Campau Handi ¬ cap He also won three stakes at Thistle Down and just before his death in New Orleans distinguished himself by finishing second to Whirlaway in the Louisiana Handicap HandicapDefense Defense is a notably fast horse and his record shows him to have won nine of 19 engagements last year and two of four this season His outstanding victories in 1942 came in the Chicago Handicap at Washing ¬ ton Park and in the Burlingame Handicap at Bay Meadows It was while he was rac ¬ ing at Bay Meadows that Mrs Bonner ac ¬ quired Defense Among other prominent members of the Bonner stable are First of All Valdina Paul Vegas Justice Careless Star Blen and the twoyearold Aunt Dell Like Defense Careless Star Blen and Aunt Dell were ac ¬ quired during the winter and they should prove useful members of the Texasowned stable First of All will be no stranger to Detroiters for he won the Governors Handicap and the Sport of Kings Handi ¬ cap here last summer
