Challenge Challenge Me Me Arkansas Arkansas Derby Derby Victor; Victor; Grasshopper Grasshopper II. II. Beats Beats Argonne Argonne Woods Woods Shows Way Home In Ponce de Leon Shifty Crenshaw Racer Has To Sustain Claim of Foul In Handicap at Tropical CORAL GABLES. Fla.. April 1.— Grasshopper II. annexed the Ponce de Leon Handicap at Tropical Park this afternoon to his growing score for the coffers of W, W. Crenshaw, who claimed him during the Hialeah season for ,500 from Mrs. Tilyou Christopher. This added ,680 to the score of something more than ,000 he has won under the Crenshaw silks. In this the French-bred son of Banstar was not confirmed winner by the stewards until they had considered a claim of foul lodged by E. Campbell, who had finished second with Argonne Woods, from the Christopher Ranch. The charge that Billie Thompson, on the winner, had roughed Argonne Woods on the stretch turn. There seemed no good reason for the claim and it was not allowed. This was the final day of the season as far as the Gables Association is concerned, for beginning with the sport of Monday and for the final six days the track and the racing has been turned over to the Tropical Park Fund, Inc., a non-profit concern that will devote all of the profits to various designated charities. A crowd of 7,043 attended. Qualify for 0,000 Race Six went to the post for the mile and a sixteenth of the Ponce de Leon, and both Grasshopper II., by his victory, and Argonne Woods, by his good race, qualified for the 0,000 Tropical Handicap of next Saturday. Back of them, third went to Twoses. and he was a full four lengths before Mixer, with Stinging Bee and Sweep Swinger, the other starters, beaten off rather badly. Mixer sprinted into the lead leaving the stalls, but Thompson sent Grasshopper II. right after him and the pair raced two lengths before Argonne Woods and Stinging Bee as the small field rounded the-turn into the backstretch. It was apparent early that Grasshopper II. could run down Mixer at the first asking, but Thompson bided his time until the Canaan gelding softened up a bit, and Argonne Woods moved at the same time. Then Grasshopper II. was asked to step, and soon be took command. As Mixer weakened and Argonne Woods moved into second place the latter met with some interference, but it did not appear that Grasshopper II. was in any way to blame. In the run home Grasshopper II. held Argonne Woods perfectly safe to beat him a length and a quarter. t "
