Shagrins Red -Dock in the featured Wakefield Purse, This was a gallop of a mile and a sixteenth for older horses in grade D" and to win the former Greentree gelding led home Jake Freedmans Sir War and J. M. Hutchins Soverton in a fighting finish. Earlier the Jersey rider had won with Sil- ver Donna in the second, High One in the third, and One Tip in the fourth. He com- pleted a riding triple here yesterday. After a morning that presaged a really cold day for the faithful the thermometer climbed until conditions were delightful for the sport and there was a goodly crowd on hand for what was offered. Then when a goodly percentage of the favorites were successful the day was that much more pleasant. In the Wakefield it was W. W. Crenshaws Bygones who cut out the early running and Eads had him under a slight restraint as he galloped along with Lucias Sun racing at his heels and Red Dock another length away and Permane was riding confidently as the leaders approached the turn from the straight of the backstretch. It was there Permane made his first move, but at the same time Sir War. the favorite, was roused by Critchfield and Bygones began to shorten stride. Passes Sir War After rounding into the stretch Sir War showed in front and a furlong out looked all over a winner, but Permane would not give up and, under a vigorous drive, Red Dock came again and, as Sir War weakened under the drive, the "son of Peace Chance was winner by three parts of a length. Soverton finished going well, but was three lengths back of Sir War as he beat the tired Bygones for third. The form players were off on the right foot as favorites were first home in both the first and the second race, when Payable won for the Christopher Ranch and Silver Donna successfully carried the H and W Stables silks. That gave Layton and Permane winning rides and the Daily Double paid 7.00. Then in the third Bobby Permane hung up his second score, when he was the pilot aboard Chalara, a long shot who whipped Play Greenock, with the favorite, Canters Best, only able to finish third. Chalara paid 1.90. Eddie Arcaro was back in action in the fourth when in one of his powerful finishes he landed Slight Edge, from Harold Clarks Louisiana Farm, winner in a camera finish over Not Tomorrow, with Lively Man fin- ishing a close third. Slight Edge was the choice to pay .10. * i ■ :
