I George Browner., Named! Maryland State Steward Commission Announces Choice Following Wednesday Meeting BALTIMORE, Md., April 6.— George i i Brown, Jr., was named steward to represent j the Maryland Racing Commission. The appointment of the popular racing official was brought about last evening at a meeting here of the commission, presided over by chairman Frank Small, Jr., and with commissioners George P. Mahoney and H. Courtenay Jenifer present. The selection of Brown, who served in the same capacity at all Maryland tracks last year, refuted presumptions in many quarters ihat Wilmer Brinton would be named to the post. In addition to the latter, | J. Walton Bolgiano also figured among those considered for the position. Incidentally. Brown is more or less permanent in the office. He first served as commission ! steward in 1920 and continued to do so until 1937, when replaced by William L. Harron, who in turn was displaced last year. Harron was this year chosen by the Maryland Jockey Club as its representative for the forthcoming 28-day meeting of this states four major tracks, which gets under way at Pimlico April 12. It is now up to Brown and Harron to decide upon a third man to serve with them in the stand. Last spring a deadlock evolved from inability on their part to agree upon a conferee. A compromise was effected, resulting in elevation of Mathias C. "Ty" Shea to the pagoda. Besides naming the commission steward, the judicial body for racing in this com- I | monwealth approved the list of officials for the Pimlico meeting. It includes Charles J. McLennan, who will serve as racing secretary for flat racing, and Edward J. Bren- j ! nan. steeplechase racing secretary. The now famous Maryland 1 per cent affair," a request by the commission for ; : accounting by the four tracks for an aggre- S j gate sum estimated in excess of ,000,000 accrued since 1938 from deductions of 1 per i cent from wagering pools and specified for improvements of racing" was not consid- j ered at the commissions meeting. In reports : recently submitted by the racing asso- ; ciations the greater portion of the monies I was explained as having been consumed by j taxation. An announcement by the com- j mission on its opinion regarding the tracks i : reports is expected soon.
