Suffolk Downs Increases Minimum Purses to ,200 License to Conduct 60-Day Meet Granted by Racing Commission BOSTON. Mass., April 6. — Purse and stakes values at Suffolk Downs will be sharply increased this season, it was announced today. Following notification by the Massachusetts State Racing Commission today that Suffolk Downs has been granted a license to conduct its 60-day meeting from May 15 to July 22, inclusive, Gordon B. Hanlon, president of Eastern Racing Association, Inc., stated that Suffolk Downs would have a minimum purse of ,200, an increase of 20 per cent over the minimum purse announced before the 1943 meeting. Hanlon said Suffolk Downs has already announced an increase from 0,000 to 5,000 for its three traditional two-year-old stake races, and has reinstated the 5,000 added Yankee Handicap, a total of 5,000 added stakes values. "It will be the policy of Suffolk Downs to offer purses scaled in proportion to the value of the horses racing at the Boston track. Better horses will run for better purses, but in no case will any purse be less than ,200, which will be offered to horses running for a claiming price of ,000." Earlier commissioner Bayard Tuckerman stated that he had opposed the granting of the Suffolk license, which was approved by a majority vote. Tuckerman said: "I suggested to the new management in advance of the vote that I believe an increase of 10 per cent in purses was in order." ;
