Challenge Me, Bell Buzzer Appear On Churchill Track for Exercise Kentucky Derby Candidates* Attract Turfmens Attention During Busy Training Hours LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 6— Brolite Farms Challenge Me, the improved son of Challenger II. and Cash Book, and Dave Fergusons Bell Buzzer, runner-up to the Brolite three-year-old in last Saturdays renewal of the Arkansas Derby, attracted considerable attention when they appeared on the track during the busiest training period to date at Churchill Downs today. Trainer Dan Cataldo lost no time in transferring Challenge Me to the scene of the Kentucky Derby, where racing will be ushered in by the Keeneland Race Course on Saturday, April 15. However, trainer Charles Ferguson was not as fortunate in securing shipping space for Bell Buzzer and the son of Bel Aethel did not reach Derby -town until late yesterday. Cliff Burke, chief assistant to Tom Young, general superintendent of the American Turf Association tracks, announced today that five carloads of thoroughbreds were scheduled to leave Oak-lawn today for Louisville and topping the shipment would be Erlanger Stables Shut Up, who finished third to Challenge Me and Bell Buzzer in the Arkansas Classic. Buike also received word from Florida that R. "Red" Wingfield, newly appointed trainer of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Moores Circle M Ranch stable, had left the Magic City for Louisville. Upon arrival here he will augment his stable with several horses coming from the farm near Lexington. Heavy Training Period The track proper was in superb condition this morning and the dockers put in their most strenuous day since training started here several weeks ago. Meanwhile, Col. Matt J. Winn, who arrived here Tuesday, was directing the pre-meeting details of the Churchill Downs season, which will be preceded by Keene-lands seven-day meeting and a six-day War Relief meet. George B. Leach, general manager of Keeneland Race Course, Inc., is here from Lexington and plans on remaining until Saturday. The Keeneland offices will be open here Monday, and racing secretary Fred Burton at that time is expected to release weights for the ,000 added Phoenix Handicap, the main attraction for opening day. This six-furlong sprint that was won by Miss Dogwood last year, attracted twenty-three nominations. According to word received from Lexington, James W. Smith, trainer of Alfred Parkers By Jimminy, is planning on transferring the son of Pharamond II. here the early part of next week. At the same time Hal Price Headley is sending 20 head and Emerson Davis will bring 12 horses, the property of Thomas B. Cromwell, Dr. J. C. Braswell, Garrett Watts and other owners. A check of the stables today revealed more than 900 horses are quartered at Douglas Park and Churchill Downs. The two courses can house 1,500 head and, except for quarters reserved for invading Derby candidates, all stalls will be filled before the opening of the Keeneland season.
