Frank John Winn, after 10 years of f riding selling platers and horses generally f in the Grade D» or C» Divisions, has 3 finally gotten his chance with a stable that t houses stake horses. Winn, 29 years old, hails from Bayonne. N. J. His handling of f Johns Dear and Plucky Maud last Saturday was a particular satisfaction to those ? who insist that "good horses make good I riders." Milo Shields, who was a patient during r the better part of the winter at a New Orleans hospital, was recently discharged j from the institution, according to word . received here. Shields will remain in New Orleans to recuperate. He gave up the i horses he was slated to train, as stalls were not available in New York. Trainer Eddie Mulrenan stated that ■ First Fiddle was fortunate in escaping with I I but a minor injury in his runaway on Saturday. First Fiddle unseated his ex-, ercise rider while being prepared for a trial. • He ran through the gap leading to the j stable area narrowly escaping a post and a tree. Reports from Johns Hopkins Hospital in I Baltimore are to the effect that trainer W. E. Martin is showing improvement. He • left Miami for that institution for an oper-: • ation. He was on the sidelines during the greater part of the winter season. Irving Gushen, who races a draft of - horses under the care of trainer Tommy Queen, is ill at his Brooklyn home, accord-t • ing to advices received here today. Buddy Mayberry is among the latest of • the flu victims and during his illness his charges will be handled by Louis Schaefer. Nick Huff will handle the riding engage-• • ments of jockey Jimmy Stout during the I New York season. The draft status of several of the ! younger trainers at the present moment is undecided. After receiving their notice to undergo physical examination they were ; . f f 3 t f ? I r j . i ■ I I • j I • • - • • • I ! ; later notified not to report until further orders. ■ Jockey Bill Pearson was granted a riders license and will perform during the meeting now in progress at Jamaica. Starter George Cassidy has placed Blue Ridge on the schooling list. The horse will not be permitted to start until his manners improve at the post. Jockey Arthur Valentine was granted a license to ride here and expects to swing into action soon. The Killer has been placed on the stew-; ards list and entry of the horse will be refused until further notice. Trainer R. A. Coward registered Marriage and other horses that he brought here from Hialeah Park. They are to be raced at this meeting. Tommy Tault with a division of the Miami-owned C. A. ONeill, stable arrived from Florida. N. Gonzalez arrived from Tropical Park with Gothic and other horses that he will race at this meeting. Nat Ray came on from Saratoga Springs where he wintered a band of two-year- olds. A draft of the W. W. Crenshaw stable was transferred to Narragansett Park. Trainer Wallace has 14 in his charge at the Aqueduct course. Jockey E. Plesa arrived from Florida and will ride at the current meeting. Apprentice Richard Meade, who rode during the Florida winter meetings, was among the recent arrivals to join the riding colony here. Racing secretary and handicapper John B. Campbell released the second edition of the Jamaica condition books to horsemen here at the Metropolitan Jockey Club course. 1
