Santa Anita Derby Has 44 Nominees Sir Bim# Checkerhall, Best Effort and Busher Foremost Hopefuls for 0,000 Race ARCADIA. Calif., June 7.— Busher. turf-doms princess of the three-year-olds, and a line-up of some of the top colts in training are among the 44 nominations announced this morning for the 0,000 Santa Anita Derby, which will have its eighth running after almost a four-year absence on Saturday. June 23. Sir Bim. impressive winner of the six-furlong San Felipe Stakes; Checkerhall, here from Mexico City with an imposing record of victories, including the Derby Mexicano: Best Effort. Sea Swallow and Bymeabond. the latter two now in Louisville getting ready to run in Saturdays Kentucky Derby, are listed among the foremost candidates. The big interest in the renewal of the Santa Anita Derby, scheduled to be run -for the first time in the summer, but with -the distance still at one and one-eighth miles, will be the acid test that will be -applied to Louis B. Mayers outstanding filly, who was the champion of her sex and age last season and has started sensationally as a three-year-old, her sweep of the Santa Susana making it two in a row. In the previous seven runnings of the local derby there has been only one filly — Ciencia in 1939 — to win it. Busher is coming up to this years Santa Anita Derby much more favored than Ciencia, but a number of her colt rivals will step up with the distance being lengthened. Charles S. Howard, who won the Santa Anita Derby with Porters Cap the last time it was run in 1941. and Harry M. Warners W-L Ranch top the list of nominess with four apiece. Seabiscuit. Rosemont, Special Agent, Sarada and Don Mike, stallions who ran in the 00,000 Santa Anita Handicap, are represented with their get on the eligibility list.
