To Reopen Pimlico For Single Program Pavot to Start in 0,000 Week-End Feature; Decide Dixie, Oaks on Same Card BALTIMORE. Md., June 9.— Now that the Kentucky Derby has been run, the turf spotlight turns to Pimlico where on Saturday one of the outstanding programs in the long history of racing will be presented. It will be highlighted by the fifty-fifth Preakness Stakes, second leg of the "Triple Crown embracing the Derby, the local classic and the Belmont Stakes, to be run on Saturday, June 23. Ordinarily, the Preakness would be the lone attraction on Pimlicos final program of the spring season, but because of the ban on racing this year, all that has been changed. Pimlico held a 10-day spring session and the return here for the Preakness Saturday will be a one-day affair, just to keep up the continuity of Marylands richest offering and to give three-year-olds a chance to earn undying glory by winning all three of the big spring events for members of that division. Having decided to reopen Pimlico for one day in order to present the Preakness, president Henry A. Parr III., of the Maryland Jockey Club, decided also to go "whole hog" in giving turf patrons something out of the ordinary and he has set up a card which may be referred to as the "Dream Program!" Five Stake Races Scheduled For in addition to the Preakness, worth 0,000, Pimlico will offer the 0,000 Dixie Handicap; the 0,000 Pimlico Oaks: the ,000 Jennings Handicap and the ,000 Nursery Stakes. Three overnight races will complete this stellar card. Eight of the 16 three-year-olds named for todays Derby are eligible for the Preakness as well and it seems very likely that the big majority of these will come along from Louisville for the mile and three-sixteenths of the Pimlico event. This group includes C. V. Whitneys Jeep, Calumet Farms Pot o Luck, Christiana Stables Alexis, F. W. Hoopers Hoop Jr., Mrs. W. G. Lewis Darby Dieppe, C. S. Howards Sea Swallow, E. R. Bradleys Burning Dream, and Mrs. J. K. Houssels Bymeabond. Besides the group of Derby competitors. the Preakness also lists four of the horses which ran in todays Kent Stakes at Dela-iware Park. They are Brookfield Farms Brookfield. the Pentagon Stables The Doge, Bobanet Stables Bobanet, and W. L. Branns Challenging. The first three of this quartet were supplementary nominees to the local stakes at a cost of ,500 and it appears likely they will take a run for the 0,000 here. Ten Supplementary Entries There were 10 other supplementary entrants in the Preakness, including Best Effort, recently sold by C. C. Tanner to Jay Paley; C. S. Howards Bismarck Sea, Darby Dieppe, H. C. Hatchs Fair Jester, Mill Brook Stables Hal. C. A. ONeils Jakajones and Ship Call, Jeep, and Mrs. P. A. B. Wideners Polynesian. However, despite all this talent, there will be a great deal of interest shown in the appearance of Walter M. Jeffords Pavot in the Preakness. for this unbeaten champion of last seasons juveniles was not named for the Derby. While Pavot met defeat for the first time recently in the Withers Mile, that was his first outing of the year and horsemen who have watched his steady progress in training expect him to be at his peak for the local engagement. Nominations in the other four stakes on the week-end card here are such that the Pimlico management is inclined to the belief that each will bring out a well-filled and well-matched field, thus giving what probably will be the tracks largest crowd a real run for its money. All seats have been sold for weeks, luncheon reservations have swamped the H. M. Stevens Company, caterers, and all other signs point to a record-smashing afternoon. Delaware Park and Charles Town, the two tracks closest to Pimlico, have shown fine sportsmanship in closing their plants for the day, thus giving all those connected with the game a chance to take in the special presentation. The move also enables Pimlico to staff its plant competently for the day. #B | j i j , I , j | : j i j j I j j j | ! ! 1 ! , j i
