Nine Fillies and Mares Match Strides In 5,000 Hannah Dustin at Suffolk Recce, Elpis, Segula and 4 Letmenow Main Entrants In Mile and Sixteenth Test SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 14. The 10th running of the 5,000 Hannah Dustin Handicap, mile and a sixteenth test for fillies and mares, which will feature the week-end card here, drew a field of nine good representatives of that division. Annually one of the better events on the Sufflk Downs stake program, this years renewal is no exception, as there is considerable interest locally as to whether William Helis Elpis, winner of the event last year, can repeat. While Mrs. William R. Flemmings Love-day, now the property of Helis and doing duty as a broodmare at his New Jersey farm, won the race in 1940 and 1942, no horse has ever won successive renewals. Elpis will have her work cut out for her in attempting to accomplish that feat, because three good fillies, Mrs. C. V. Whitneys Recce, Belair Studs Segula and Hal Price Headleys Letmenow, have been shipped in from New York for the race. In addition to the aforementioned quartet, L. Sidell and Ruth Sidells Burgoo Maid and Layout, B. A. Darios Slender Lady, Rumstick Lodges Stepping Miss and Donna Marias Bills Doll have been named to start. The latter was a surpriseentry and will carry 98 pounds and apprentice G. Lafleur. Elpic was given her final tune-up for the race this morning when trainer Ray Folke had her on the track bright and early. The four-year-old daughter of Blue Larkspur Faucille dOr went three furlongs in :37 over the drying-out racing strip. Zehr, who rode her in the Trial, is expected to have the assignment again. W. U. Ridenour, who handles the Head- ley horses here, also gave Letmenow the same sort of a tune-up, the Menow filly stepping off the three furlongs in exactly the same time. Recce, who arrived from .New York only yesterday and probably will go to the post as the favorite, was on the track this morning, but she was only given an easy gallop. Ruth Sidells Burgoo Maid was also out for the same type of workout. Slender Lady and Layout were given good half-mile tune-ups. Slender Ladys was the best, as that brown daughter of Unbreakable Maitresse Royale went the distance in :50, while Layout was caught in :52. Recce goes to the post in the Hannah Dustin with a third to Sicily and Surosa in the 0,000 added Top Flight Handicap at Belmont Park, a mile and a sixteenth event; behind her. She was in front for some distance in that race and was only beaten a length and a half for first money. Elpis won here last Saturday in the Trial, a race designed to prep Hannah Dustin eligibles. She picks up one pound off that race. Segulas last was a second to Darby Delilah in a class "D" event in New York. In that six-furlong event she was closing fast and gave evidence that the distance in tomorrows feature will be more to her liking. The Sidell entry of Layout and Burgoo Maid will not be overlooked, due to the fact that Burgoo Maid beat Recce in Chicago last summer. She has been improving here and showed a good effort in the Trial. Herb Lindberg has been offered the mount on Burgoo Maid, but if he does not accept, Chris Rogers will get the assignment. Joe Licausi has been engaged to ride Layout. Slender Lady and Stepping Miss will go to the post with good efforts behind them, the former finishing second to Toolmaker, while the latter collected the place behind Elpis last Saturday.
