fans gathered at the gates of Churchill Downs this morning as soonas the rains stopped at about 630 emerging from the shelter of blocks around While they waited for the gates to open horses were going through their drills on the track and there were already several hundred patient patrons on the outside while Coaltown was amaz doorways porches and cars parked for ing the workwatchers workwatchersVendors Vendors of balloons souvenir badges and gardenias came with the first enthusiasts The vast reaches of the main grandstand filled early and the crowd began to flow into the lower portion of the centerfield before 900 oclock while the areas be ¬ hind the stands were crowded a half hour later The women had evidently been watching the sky with anxious eyes for the majority were gaily attired in anticipation of the bright sun More than an hour be ¬ fore the field paraded to the post at 1130 early comers began to take their places in the reserved boxes and hungry patrons crowded the dining rooms roomsAt At 1030 the bars opened and the ven ¬ dors of mint juleps began to circulate through the throng The grandstand and the clubhouse lawn section extending half way around
