Contest Extreme Outsider in Field Home First in Edward Burke Handicap Leads Faultless by Length And Half as Havre Closes Loyal Legion Runs Fourth FourthHAVRE HAVRE DE GRACE Md May 1 King Ranchs Contest lightweight and extreme outsider in the Edward Burke Handicap field received a perfectly judged ride from veteran Henri Mora for a length and a half triumph in the second running of the mile and a sixteenth fixture fixtureDisplaying Displaying both speed and stamina in his successful sortie the fouryearold son of Sir Gallahad HI and Skeet scampered to the wire in 143 just a second off ttje track record established last year by Natchez in winning theysame race Calumet Farms Faultless was a charging second but was not able to reach the winner E A Nicodemus Laran Walter M Jeffords Loyal Legion and H L Straus March Chick completed the field fieldFaultless Faultless who broke tardily in last weeks Harford Handicap was much more alert this afternoon leaving the barrier taking the lead for several strides He was unable to outrun his rivals to the turn however as Contest held the lead followed closely by Laran The latter took command under hustling tactics along the backstretch as Loyal Legion raced in third position and Faultless in fourth March Chick trailed at that stage just as he did throughout the running runningAfter After being displaced by Laran jockey Mora wisely took Contest under restraint which probably was a move that meant Victory After being content to allow Laran to lead into the stretch Mora set down to riding on the King Ranch representative and he responded gallantly to wear down the leader leaderHis His task was not complete however lor both Faultless and Loyal Legion were un ¬ der a drive Faultless rally proved effec ¬ tive but not so much as to permit him to menace the leader Loyal Legion flat ¬ tened out under his 124 pounds weight as ¬ signment and could beat only a single horse While Contest earned only 11950 of the 17525 purse he gave promise of becoming a serious threat in the impending fixtures this summer and fall During the Pimlico meeting he is eligible for the Dixie Handi ¬ cap which carries a 25000 association en ¬ dowment and thfe Gittings Handicap valued at 7500
