Approve Steeplechasers For Pimlias Meeting MeetingOfficials Officials Conduct Tests as Required by Commission Rule RulePIMLICO PIMLICO Baltimore M L Mayl S Bryce Wing president of the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association and Joseph F Flanagan steward representing the Maryland Racing Commission have been conducting the series of tests iieces sary before steeplechase horses are per ¬ mitted to run at Pimlico this spring springNot Not long ago the racing commission adopted a rule whereby all jumpers were required to be given official approval be ¬ fore entries would be accepted The com jnission rule placed the responsibility for the eligibility of the horses in the hands of the stewards but declares that the stewards may delegate this authority to their own representative representativeIn In an effort to get the steeplechase sport off to a good start this season Mr Wing agreed to aid steward Flanagan in passing upon the various members of the steeple ¬ chase group To date between 40 and 50 jumpers have been approved either be ¬ cause their past records disclosed them to be real jumpers of because they schooled satisfactorily for Wing and Flanagan FlanaganOnly Only a small percentage of those drilling through the field were rejected according to J Fred Golwill Pimlicos new secretary for the steeplechase division Some of the horses turned down were merely green and are expected to take tests later which may allow them to run runOwners Owners and trainers of steeplechase horses are waiching this process in Mary ¬ land with great interest for it is the first real effort to produce a better brand of sport All those interested in the infield game are anxious to see the plan succeed thus providing contests between evenly matched and welltrained performers and eliminating fields which previously con ¬ tained horses not ready for the exacting demands of steepiechasing
