Close Entries for First Detroit Card on May 20 20Several Several Stables Now at Downs Plan Campaigns at Motor City CityDETROIT DETROIT Mich May 10 The Detroit Racing Association which will stage its 97 day spring and summer meeting at the Fair Grounds course is making prepara ¬ tions for the Saturday May 22 inaugural day program The Motor City season will conclude on Saturday September 11 and general manager George W Lewis and the key members of his staff predict that the 1948 sport will surpass that of any previous year at the Woodward Avenue racing grounds groundsRacing Racing secretary and liandicapper Charles F Henry has arranged an excel ¬ lent schedule of handicaps and practically all of the traditional features are to be re ¬ newed during the forthcoming meeting The openingday program will feature three top attractions The richest of these is the 10000 Boots and Saddle Handicap a sixfurlong sprint for threeyearolds and upward Other outstanding events on the inauguralday card include the fivefur ¬ long Inaugural Purse for twoyearolds and the 2500 Man o War Handicap one mile and onesixteenth for threeyearolds and upward upwardEntries Entries for the Man o War and the Boots and Saddle closes on Thursday May 20 and handicapper Henry will post weights for the twin headliners on the fol ¬ lowing day According to present approved applications for stall space the two hand ¬ icap attractions undoubtedly will bring out stellar fields for many of Detroits favorite thoroughbreds are to be back at the local oval this year yearSome Some of the betterknown stables that are to campaign here are those of Carl Graham and R S Byrum Theodore D Buhl Henry Forrest Mrs Raymond Grun dy Mr and Mrs Milton Shagrin Louis J Hollenbach Mrs Lottie Wolf Mrs Nor ¬ man B Hernandez Harry Trotseks public stable Grissom Sherman John A Ki nard Jr Mrs L B Kinard and Eual Wyatt Many of these units are presently in Kentucky and they will be shipped to Michigan immediately after the close of Churchill Downs on Saturday May 15 15In In the meantime at the Fair Grounds manager Lewis is getting things ready for the long local meeting and he received word yesterday that presiding steward Jack Young will arrive here soon after the close of Churchill Downs Young who repre ¬ sents the Kentucky State Racing Com jnission as steward is a veteran with the Fair Grounds organization and the 1948 meeting will mark his fifteenth year here as steward
