R E F L E C t I O N S NEW YORK N Y May 10 Racing people throughout the country were gratified to read that Ashley T Cole chairman of the New York State Racing Commission Charles Morgan in charge of the New York racing laboratories and presi ¬ dent of the Association of Official Racing Chemists and Spencer Drayton chief of the Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau were quick to disagree with commissioner Harry J Anslinger of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics in his recent blast that stimulation of horses was on the increase While these men have deep respect for the Federal Commissioner they maintain his statement wasnot in accordance with the facts Horse racing is the most cleanly conducted sport in this country today and the activities of the men in charge of it were worthy of a better sendoff than just a blanket statement such as Anslinger made As Charles E Morgan pointed out the information as regards the use of a narcotic in the recent case cited by Mr Anslinger originated in the New York commissions laboratory and that organization extended full coopera ¬ tion to the Bureau of Narcotics It is just about time that racing officials defended the sport against people wlio make such statements but do not present the facts to support their charges A A A AWednesdays Wednesdays 15000 Remsen has some interesting aspects even though the twoyearold division is very much in the experimental state A week ago Saturday they staged the Youthful Stakes and Eternal World the winner and Blue Peter who ran third showed promise enough to warrant consideration if they start in the fivefurlong race which is the midweek feature In this same race Mr Jay Ennobled and Model Cadet the lat ¬ ter being from the barn of Mrs Ada L Rice werevin the beaten field Although Model Cadet is an eligible for the Remsen Mrs Rice appears to have a more for ¬ midable pair in Admiral Lea and Current News The latter colt who is by Bull Dog out of Challomine by Challenger II cost 20000 as a yearling but the manner in which he won the second race at Jamaica on Saturday stamps him a fine prospect in Wednesdays event In all 159 juveniles were named for the Remsen and while many of them who are royally bred have yet to make their debut there are quite a few who have demonstrated they are entitled to their chance in this race including Fred Hoopers Ocean Drive William Helis Ennobled and the Brpokmeade Stables Gnu Many of the highest priced yearlings of the 1947 sales are among the eligibles including the Jaclyn Stables Spotted Bull who cost 45000 and Blue Admiral a War Admiral colt who drew a final bid of 30000 A A AImportant Important races will mark the closing of both Pimlico and Jamaica this weekend with the 100000 Preakness a race that will gain most of the attention nationally The withdrawal of My Request takes some of the interest ffbm Marylands threeyearold classic but we still be ¬ lieve that the starting of Coaltown as a running mate Jor Citation will add rather than detract interest from this event which is the second leg of the Triple Crown With all their speed the Calumet pair will have a job cut out for them in attempting to lower the one and threesixteenths mile track record which Riverland es ¬ tablished in May of 1943 by running the distance in 156 The fastest Preakness at this distance was the 157 which Alsab negotiated in 1942 and just a year later Count Fleet was timed in 157 on a fast track Coal town could come very close to these marks or force Cita ¬ tion to do so There are many fans who witnessed the Derby that still believe Coaltown will be much closer to his stablemate and especially so at the shorter dis ¬ tance of the Preakness It may be that the starting of the two horses will cause a smaller field than was first predicted but even so a huge throng should be on hand as there are many easterners who want to see this pair in competition once again A A A ASaturdays Saturdays running of the 75000 Gallant Fox Handi ¬ cap shapes up as one of the most interesting events for older horses run so far this season Unless Jimmy Jones the Calumet trainer changes his plans Armed the high weight of the race at 128 pounds will be fcept in the barn while Fervent 125 pounds and Faultless who is weighted at 118 pounds are now scheduled to uphold the honors of the Calumet Farm In the Dixie Fault ¬ less with 117 pounds finished fifth Stymie who an second to Fervent in the Dixie and Talon will be the highweights at 126 In the Gallant Fox and there is a possibility that both Cosmic Bomb and Phalanx who are both in at 125 will be sent out to oppose them Carolyn A the surprise winner of the Firenze Handicap with 114 pounds on the weekend must bfi given consideration in the Gallant Fox as the Whitaker miss is in that event with a feather of 108 In the Firenze she defeated Gallorette the champion moneywinning mare of the world by two and a half lengths Gallorette was toting 126 in the Firenze but in the Gallant Fox she gets in with 117 just two more pounds than the assignment to But Why Not who was scratched out of last Saturdays race On a fast track both Gallorette and BuCWhy Not will join with Carolyn A as threats to the top contenders of the opposite sex sexA A A A AGarden Garden State Park has now passed the halfway mark in the 40day meeting that will come to a close on Monday May 31 Weekend throngs have held up well at the Camden course and a good crowd should be on hand this Saturday for the running of the 10000 Ran cocas Stakes for twoyearold fillies The Dell Stables Flower Bed has caught the fancy of New Jersey race ¬ goers and according to present plans she is a certain starfer in the juvenile feature Although she cost 20000 Flower Bed was one of the cheapest of the twoyearolds taken out of the last Louis B Mayer sale A few days ago we were discussing Flower Bed with the MGM chieftain and he said that he agreed with Herman B Delman in not selling this filly for 45000 She should be worth that much Mayer said as a broodmare She was one of the best bred fillies in my entire sale being by Beau Pere out of Boudoir n a daughter of Mahmoud The Dell Stable is owned by Herman B Delman the worldfamous designer and manufacturer of ladies shoes who since he lost Coronal has wanted a good horse to carry his colors Judging by the two victories of Flower Bed to date it may be that Delman will realize his purchase price before this Beau Pere filly gets around to the dayswhen she will be retired to stud
