Several Witnesses Take Stand at Cilio Hearing HearingContinue Continue Case Until Tomorrow When Trainer Likely Will Testify TestifyAngelb Angelb Cilio well known trainer now standing suspended on a stimulation charge began the initial phases of a hear ¬ ing before a large audience at the offices of the Illinois Racing Board yesterday morning The trainer was suspended by the Lincoln Fields stewards after a urine test allegedly revealed the presence of a stimulant after the Cliotrained horse Richwall won a race at Washington Park June 1 After volumes of testimony was placed into the records and a large num ¬ ber of witnesses took the stand the case was continued to Thursday of this week at 10 a m at the same offices officesCilio Cilio now stands suspended pending fur ¬ ther action by the Illinois Board He vehe ¬ mently protested his innocence after yes ¬ terdays hearing claiming he is being framed framedKey Key witness of yesterdays heated hear ¬ ing was John Francis Staunton a groom in the employ of Cilio Staunton main ¬ tained that he held the horse Richwall while Cilio personally administered a hypo ¬ dermic needle into the horses chest prior to the horse being sent to the paddock on the day of the race He said that after Cilio injected the needle he was ordered to rub the horses chest and he also testi ¬ fied that Cilio told him the stuff would not show and that the horse would win winStaunton Staunton added that because he had no money at the time he asked Cilios son sonContinued Continued on Page Three Several Witnesses Take Stand at Cilio Hearing HearingContinue Continue Case Until Tomorrow When Trainer Likely Will Testify TestifyContinued Continued from Page One OneEugene Eugene to buy him a combination ticket on the horse and that he received the win ¬ nings from trainer Cilio at the end of the day dayStaunton Staunton was severely crossexamined by Cilios attorney Michael A Romano but his story remained virtually intact intactUpon Upon opening of proceedings attorney Romano requested that the hearing be de ¬ layed pending his further briefing of the case but Maj Ednyfed H Williams chair ¬ man of the Board who was aided by his associate members William E Fay and Frank E Mandel ruled that it must pro ¬ ceed in the interest of the public and everyone else concerned He said that be ¬ cause of Cilios present standing 15 horses are forced to remain inactive inactiveCilio Cilio did not take the stand but is ex ¬ pected to testify at tomorrows session However he conferred with his attorney throughout the hearing hearingIt It was brought out during the hearing that three hypodermic needles were found in Cilios car by members of the Chicago Police Department but that phase lost much of its credence when jockey Donal Bowcut who rode Richwall testified that the car in which the needles had been found had not been used for three or four days prior to the race in question Bow cut is an apprentice under contract to N L Raffelman who owns Richwall and who employs Cilio as a trainer trainerIt It was also brought out that Cilio will ¬ ingly allowed himself to take a lie de ¬ tector test but the results were not re ¬ vealed at the hearing A number of wit ¬ nesses said Cilio had admitted to them that he had personally administered the hypo ¬ dermic needle on the day of the race There was also considerable testimony to the effect that Cilio thought the injection contained penicillin penicillinMaurice Maurice J Gilbert a lieutenant of the Chicago Police Department testified that Cilio agreed to point out the man who was selling the stuff at the racetrack but that Cilio did not show up at the meeting place placeOthers Others active in the hearing were Clem ¬ ent A Nance secretary of the Illinois Rac ¬ ing Board William J Colohan attorney representing the Racing Board Dr Mar ¬ tin F Kent veterinarian representing the Racing Board Charles F Driscoll urine taker representing the Illinois Racing Board Frank A Davis saliva test and urine transportation agent representing the Board Dr Y T Oester chemist repre I senting the Board N L Raffelman own ¬ er of the horse Richwall Capt Daniel A Gilbert attached to the States Attorneys office Sgt Thomas F Cooper attached to the States Attorneys office Sgt William Sweeney attached to the States Attorneys office and John M Leonard investigator representing the Illinois Racing Board
