JUDGES STAND I By Charles Hatton Wine Lists Pedigree Is Travelogue Greentree Adds to Stud in Kentucky Doherty Adopts New Pasture Program Rouse Inbreeds to Equipoise Family FamilyLEXINGTON LEXINGTON Kyf June 8 Form in the twoyearold division has been more or less unresolved up to now Some of the best fillies in the Middle West will appear for Lincoln at Washingtons 10000 Miss America Stakes on Saturday some of the best colts in the East in Belmonts colt divi ¬ sion of its 10000 National Stallion Mrs Albert Sabaths homebred Alsabs Day is most familiar of the eligibles for the Miss America She is not a particularly fast filly put of the gate which sometimes gets her into difficulties but she can finish Last winter we heard that Greentree had a most promising colt in Wine List and his form suggests these advance notices were not exaggerated He can be made out quite the best colt in the East on the basis that he beat Marabout who beat Eternal World who beat Blue Peter Probably he will be the favorite for the National Stallion If it interests you his dam Fizz U raced for Jock Whitney in England at two the only season she was in competition and she seems to have been a quick sort In her four starts she won the Princess Royal and the Westminster Stakes for twoyearold fillies running five furlongs in 514s on a straightaway in the latter event She is by Manna from the Dis Done mare Ma blonde that Greentree sent to England Mablonde is out of old Inaugural Wine List is the first living foal from Fizz II who now has a likeable Shut Out yearling filly and was this year bred to Questionnaire QuestionnaireGreentree Greentree has been sort of streamlining its racing string and stud in the last several years with the pur ¬ chase of Bimelech La Troienne and Blade of Time the importation of Doubtless and the sale of some of the mares We learn from Clarkson Beard that Whats New and Bimlette both stakes winners at two are to join the broodmare band Whats New is a watchcharm of a Blenheim II filly who was retained for sentimental rea ¬ sons because her dam Small World was a gift of the late Mrs Payne Whitney to her daughter Mrs C S Payson For all her lack of size Whats New won the Betsy Ross and Folly Drummond last season New York turf goers may see the South American horse Doubtless about Sara ¬ toga Trainer John Gaver is giving him ample time in the hope he will reproduce his form here The A C Ernst estate has a small stud of rather good mares at the farm which adjoins Idle Hour here Aladear was turned back to the stud this spring and Alfoxie Alablue and Nina Bruja probably will join the broodmares next winter Manager Lou Doherty showed us a crop of seven foals at the Ernst Farm this morning and in the group is a substantial Bull Lea filly out of the Equipoise mart Alpoise who is the dam of Alphara There is also a Questionnaire colt out of Albonny who is smoother than most of his sires progeny Sun Bijur has a noteworthy colt by Aletern a winner of the Suburban Equi ¬ poise sired fewer than 50 mares but they are hot just now as the saying goes for they are the dams of Assault Quarter Pole and Dinner Gong Alpoise was fast if windy in training and she now has a stout yearling filly by Bimelech We expect that Aladear is potentially the Ernst Farms best producer for she was rated well up on Campbells Experimental and showed genuine class She appears to be in foal to the young sire Alsab Doherty has innovated a program of rotating the stock at Ernst Farm which should benefit their growth and development and in turn influence their racing ability in future seasons He has bisected some of the larger fields with fencing which permits himto run steers on a field one week the horses the following week The cattle sort of vacuum clean the fields of any infectious larvae before it is developed at the tops of the grass and the fields are cleaned following use by horses There are no ill effects to the cattle which fertilize the grass for the horses horsesJ J Howard Rouse is making rather an interesting ex ¬ periment in inbreeding this season He is not unlike Bob Kleberg in that he is an admirer of Equipoise and the incest is along this line Among Rouses mares is a three yearold called Scrappy who is by Fighting Fox out of Scarp The latter is by Rolled Stockings a pennant horse out of old Escarpolette a foundation dam of the Midway stud Escarpolette won many races and was a halfsister to Swinging the dam of Equipoise Rouse has bred Scrappy to Battledore who is a son of Equipoise I think that inbreeding is a dangerous thing unless one knows the dispositions and conformation of the individuals Rouse says Battledore was galloped with a set of mares maresTurf Turf ana King Ranchs Be Like Mom the dam of But Why Not has a colt foal by War Admiral and was bred to Revoked Olympias dam Miss Dolphin set a fivefurlong track mark of 5BYs at Detroit time her son has approximated When Bill Crump saw Swap Out as a yearling he declared a man would almost train one like that for nothing Harry Isaacs of the Brookfield Stable was a recent visitor looking at some yearlings and inspecting the bloodstock he has at Mrs Robert H Bardwells Shady Lane farm Two colts and two fillies by Mahmoud are in the keeneland Summer Sales including Miss Woolwines son of War Flower At the Monmouth Year ¬ ling Show last year Preston Burch gave the blue to Big Nose who since has won the N J Stallion Stakes
