Paul Kelley to Campaign Stable at Lincoln Meeting Gangway, Stud Poker Top String Of Eighteen in Trainers Care HOMEWOOD, HI., May 9.— Paul L. Kelley, for many years one of the leading trainers in Illinois, recently arrived from Florida with a stable that bids fair to cut a wide swath into the winners circle daring the impending Lincoln Fields meeting, which -opens at Washington Park next Tuesday, with the closing slated for May 26. Kelley, who trains for various patrons, presently has 18 horses registered and they include the stakes winners Gangway and Stud Poker, with others being of the useful sort that will be seen in action almost daily. Kelleys contract jockey, Logan Batcheller, will do the bulk of the riding. Gangway is particularly fond of the local surface, for it was here last season that he showed the finest performance of his career. The five-year-old son of Gallant Fox — Humility, by Hyperion, came here last spring fresh from a Florida campaign and walked off with the 0,000 LaSalle Handicap at a mile and one-eighth. It was shortly thereafter that injuries forced him to the sidelines and there he remained until he went to Florida, where he brice again found his best stride, particularly at Gulf-stream Park during the waning stages of the Sunshine State season. Gangway presently is being prepped for the 0,000 Crete Handicap, a dash of six furlongs that will open the stakes schedule at the meeting on Saturday, May 20. If all goes well, he will start in the subsequent six and one-half furlongs Edward J. Fleming Memorial Handicap and the Lincoln Handicap, the latter being at a mile and * one-quarter. Stud Poker, who went postward coupled with Gangway during the Florida season, was unable *to show to his best advantage there, but reports have it that he is training well. Another Kelleyite who may compete in stakes here is Rewarder, a sprinter who flashed a high flight of speed in Florida. Others trained by Kelley here are But Definitely, Marse George, Dobodura, Shel-tie, Bomont, Judex, Royal Tartan, South Covert, Rascal, Better Buy, Omaha Traveler, Great Fun, Chanceling, Devil Dust and Bills Way.
