Kentucky Derby Likely To Be Televised in SS SSChurchill Churchill Downs to Handle All Video Arrangements in Future FutureCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 6 The 1953 renewal of the Kentucky Derby probably will be televised next year Churchill Down president Bill Corum has announced Corum further stated that Downs directors would study all television possibilities touching on theater and other closedcircuit types such as those developed by telemeter and phonovision In the latter two mediums viewers would pay extra to receive and witness special programs programsCorum Corum said that no formal decision in the matter had been reached but the huge crowd last Saturday shattering alltime records painted a pleasing and optimistic picture for continued Derby TV The 1952 running of the threeyearold classic was the first to be televised live over a na ¬ tional network and Churchill Downs offi ¬ cials had said the future of the telecasts would depend on attendance and wagering totals this year yearThe The Downs president remarked that TV certainly didnt hurt last Saturdays turnout turnoutIn In the future however all TV arrange ¬ ments will be entirely in the hands of Churchill Downs and not CBS as was the case this season Churchill Downs is to be free to elect the sponsor or sponsors and to establish fees One condition that is to stay in force is that the Columbia Broadcast ¬ ing System will remain as the network over which the Derby will be shown
