CONNORS CORNER By Connors BELMONT PARK Elmont L I N Y May 6 Hill Gail is being given the honors along with the roses he earned in Kentucky on Saturday and there are still a few who be ¬ lieve Tom Fool will wind up Horse of the Year but if they hand ¬ ed out trophies for the colt with the biggest heart a trim slightly built animal named Charlie McAdam would rate a handsome hunk of silver John Clinton Hialeah Clarks colt rates an accolade fash ¬ ioned from giant red carrots for his courage The Heliopolis colt showed de ¬ termination in his winning races at Hia ¬ leah last winter taking three of them in photos after appearing beaten at the eighth pole and he stood another hard drive yesterday in the first division of the Swift Stakes but those finishes are not what we have in mind Last summer Charlie McAdam was taken sick while at Saratoga so sick that he was given very little chance for survival He recovered however and it was only after that illness that he began to show traces of genuine class He went on last winter to climax a series of fine races with a score in the second half of the Flamingo Stakes lead ¬ ing throughout the mile and a furlong in the same time as Blue Man required in the first division Then with the spring classics ahead of him illness struck again This time Charlie came down with distemper a disease more frequently associated with dogs The deadly thing about distemper is its depressing effect on the animal many of which seem to lose all heart when strick ¬ en and die for lack of will to live Not Charlie McAdam however Clark says that he was not given any of the miracle drugs but his own heart performed a miracle of sorts for here came Charlie yesterday aft ¬ ernoon not only fit enough to win at the first asking after a long layoff but ready and willing to outgame a clever field The reformed newspaperman he was named for has a right to thrown out his chest and point with pride prideA A A A ANow Now that the Kentucky Derby is history a number of members of the local paddock brigade are already casting votes for the most promising of the present crop of two yearolds for next seasons Run for the Roses One youngster who appears to be of Derby quality despite the briefness of his career is Alfred Vanderbilts Native Dancer who has simply aired to success in his only two starts His first victory was registered Accolade to Charlie McAdam Colt With Biggest Heart Casting Votes for Next Derby Unsung Bankers of Turf Turfby by four and onehalf lengths and his sec ¬ ond by six lengths Both races were at Ja ¬ maica The regulars had been looking forward to a meeting between the son of Polynesian and County Clare Brookmeade Stables costly youngster in tomorrows Juvenile Stakes but Native Dancer is at present sidelined with bucked shins The Vanderbilt silks have never been seen in front in the Kentucky Derby Closest was Discoverys second to Cavalcade in 1934 Although it is rather early in the year to make predictions and a number of good twoyearolds have yet to go to the post for the first time they certainly cannot be much more impressive than has been Native Dancer Perhaps he will stand up where the temperamental Cousin failed this year Incidentally Cousin is at present be ¬ ing psychoanalyzed It would not be sur ¬ prising if he took it into his giddy head to psychoanalyze the doctor doctorA A A A AThe The unsung bankers of the turf are the gents who keep tabs on the financial status of the horsemen at the various meetings On New York tracks John Costigan and John Cullen carry on the duties In the course of a New York racing season they ride herd on between ten and fifteen million dollars including purse monies deposits for claims and racing accounts The work is very exacting and requires the patience of Job but the two gentlemen are well equipped for the position The bio ¬ graphical sketch of Ted Atkinson in our Kentucky Derby edition inadvertently re ¬ ferred to three young Atkinsons Ted says that isnt altogether incorrect as in addition to son John and daughter Cathy the Atkinson family includes Georige The latter is young Johns frisky dachshund Letters from Florida racing fans who lis ¬ tened in on the broadcast of the Kentucky Derby are praising the announcing of Fred Capossela CaposselaA A A A AJockey Jockey Hedley Woodhouse returned from Pimlico where he rode Sharp horses trained by W L Passmore and including Hannibal Mrs E DuPont Weirs thoroughbreds who are handled by Jim Ryan and a divison of the stable trained by G M OdomThe veteran Eddie Kane former crowd Earl Sande was a recent visitor in the press box boxA A A A AWe We noticethat Edward H Boss Crump was at the Kentucky Derby The hypo ¬ critical old boss turns up at all the im ¬ portant turf events but keeps on knocking racing and keeping it out of his own state The boss has found that hypocrisy pays
