Lavin Lauded for Closing Derby Day Entries Early EarlyCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 3 Racing secretary Allan Lavin was roundly congratulated today for his success in closing Derby day entries by 1 pm where last year entries failed to close until 4 pm on Friday the day before the race Lavin received 99 entries for races other than the Derby as against only 67 in 1955 and Lavin also had 17 additional entries for a substitute race raceThe The cooperation of horsemen in this matter was also commended on favor ¬ ably throughout the press box where writers were able to make their selec ¬ tions and file entries in plenty of time to make Friday and Saturday editions all over the country This was the first time that Derby entries were taken on a Thursday and the success of this plan seems to insure that the practice will be continued in future years
