New England By Fred Galiani Locklear Has Young Stable of Racers Handling Reynolds Bros 13 Homebreds Hope DeSpiritos Career Not at an End EndLINCOLN LINCOLN DOWNS Lincoln R I May 3 From the viewpoint of yduth Clyde Locklear has one of the best stables awaiting the long New England season The Reynolds Brothers outfit con ¬ sists of 13 horses six of them threeyearolds and seven juve ¬ niles all of them homebreds Locklear who checked in a short time ago from Oaklawn Park has started a couple at Lincoln but is going sparingly with the stock The youngsters are by Destino Mr Chairman and Bullseye New England fans recall Mr Chairman well as he was a popular horse around here and one of the better performers in the area Locklear is an admirer of the King Ranch stud Destino having raced two successful horses in that young stud and had a couple of coming twoyearolds by him himTrim Trim Destiny and Brazos Rose said Locklear are both by Destino and been stakes racers Trim Destiny you remember won the Arkansas Derby and finished second to Swaps in a warmup for the Kentucky Derby last year but was unplaced in the race itself I think Destino will prove to be a good stud He is one of the most beautiful horses Ive ever seen The King Ranch paid 56000 for him He only started once and Im not sure but I think he was a winner Max Hirsch told me that Destino had dazzling speed and that there was no telling that he may have been any kind of a horse Hes well bred Hes only had a couple of crops and all of them have turned out fine I think hell make good as a sire Destino is also the sire of Deep Thought winner of numerous races at Sunshine and here for George Handy who claimed him from the King Ranch Handy is currently in Kentucky and will stop off at the King Ranch to inspect Destino Theres an outside chance he may attempt to buy the stud assum ing of course he is for sale Destino is not without admirers as a stud here in New England EnglandYankee Yankee Fans Are Rooting for Tony TonyThe The news that Tony DeSpiritos riding career may have been marked 30 by an operation necessitated from a spill in Laurel was mournfully received here Although the Lawrence Mass rider has been plying his trade the past two seasons in Maryland and New York DeSpirito is still the toast of his home habitat fans Just last week DeSpirito turned in a brilliant piece of horsemanship to win the 50000 Lincoln Special on Joe Jones getting that horse home by a nose over Find despite his lugging in strongly through the stretch All hope DeSpiritos career is not over but if it must be it is appropriate that he won his last major stakes in New England where he has his home and first gained national fame Everybody not only here is hoping that his recovery will be swift and complete completeThe The horses of Mrs John P Adams the former Muriel Vanderbilt are en route from San Jose Calif to Portsmouth R I and are slated to arrive in Provi ¬ dence Saturday The cars will be transferred to Nar ragansett Park and the horses vanned to the Sandy Point Farm which Mrs Adams has leased The sports ¬ woman has transferred her operations from the West Coast because of the press of industrial development in that area The shipment consists of 18 horses two stallions six yearlings two mares with foals three other mares one horse in training a stable pony and a standardbred gelding Dave and Eileen Harrison arrived from Florida and are awaiting the opening of the Suffolk Downs meeting Dave is an official at the East Boston course while his spouse is employed in the bookkeepers office officeEven Even though it had been expected for some time the death of Mrs Lucy Taylor was not easy to take Lucy who had been Gordon Morrows secretary since 1942 had a wide acquaintance on the race tracks of the country her association with the sport going back some 30 years Lucy was a kind generous woman and a sterling worker The last few days she was in a coma and attending physicians were amazed that she lived so long They attributed it to her strong heart Every ¬ one on the race track knew that It was as big as it was strong Services will be held tonight at McAloons Funeral Parlor in Pawtucket and the remains shipped to Ohio for burial burialLoyalty Loyalty to Claimer John Peel PeelCountless Countless millions are fans of Nashua the TV idol but it is doubtful if he has any admirer as ardent as trainer George Garritys John Peel has John Peel is only a 2000 claimer Yet there is a lady from Fram ingham who has a passion for the horse Every time he starts she makes the trip to the track walks John Peel back after the race to the barn to make sure he is all right Not only that she had a St Francis of Asisi medal the patron saint of animals attached to the horses binker As far as she is concerned there is only one horse in racing Alden Dooley was a spectator making his regular Wednesday visit The patrol judges had extra duty for the last race Wednesday Just before the final event the car which transports them to their posts developed a flat and the horse watchers had to walk to their posts B A Darios classy Lassie Lea has been breezing over the Suffolk strip and the crack sprinter is being pointed lor the Paul Revere Handicap on opening dayr t t ij
