John Schapiro Set For European Trip TripLaurels Laurels President to Visit England France and Italy as Emissary for International InternationalBy By CHARLES HATTON HATTONLAUREL LAUREL Md May 3 John David Schapiro who put international competi ¬ tion on the map in this country is prepar ¬ ing to sail May 24 in the He de France to Southampton in the interests the next running Veterans Day of his Washing tion D C International at Laurel LaurelHe He disembarks on May 31st and will be present for the English Derby the classical Oaks and the Cornation Cup CupLater Later on Schapiro goes to France where he will attend the French Derby and other important events renewing acquaintances with the many friends he has made there in recent years He may move on to Rome for the Italian derby which he saw the hapless Boticelli win a couple of years ago Italy has a firstclass campaigner just now in Ribot RibotDuring During his previous trips abroad Scha ¬ piro has achieved much for the Washing ¬ ton D C International He was last sea ¬ son presented to Queen Elizabeth II who ran her Landau at Laurel and promises to be repressnted in future renewals of the roaring mile and onehalf on the turf whenever she considers that she has a worthy representative representativeAlso Also during his itinerary last year Scha ¬ piro addrecsed the Societe dEncourage ment at a special dinner where he was the guest of honor and it is indicated that this affair will be renewed in the course of his upcoming visit visitCosmopolitan Cosmopolitan Event EventIn In all the head of the Laurei associa ¬ tion will be absent about five weeks in an effort to assemble another of high Afield class horses from the various racing coun ¬ tries about Jie world for the next Inter ¬ national at this delightful course on Mon ¬ day November 12 Within the space of four years the International has attained a place alongside the outstanding traditional features in American racing as one of its most important events and certainly it is the most cosmopolitan of all If ever there is a worlds championship in horse racing we think that Laurel will stake it itSchapiro Schapiro is looking poignantly forward to the racing in Rome which he enjoys very much The weather is delightful and most of the tracks are like our own per ¬ fectly flat though of turf Italy is among the few countries who have had no repre ¬ sentation in the International InternationalSchapiro Schapiro is a native Baltimorean He has himself been riding horses since he was six over his fathers Dorsey Hall estate near Laurel and as a contestant in the areas horse shows He has graduated from Stanford University at Palo Alto in Cali ¬ fornia with a BA As of the moment he is the head of many industries Boston Met ¬ als the General Armature Manufacturing Co and he serves as a director in TRA Schapiro is much interested in the Boy Scout movement and was himself an eagle scout He and Mrs Schapiro have two sons John David Jr age 15 and Michael 13 13John John is the youngest of four children His older brother Joseph is president of the Rational Metals Company in Los Angeles
