Reflections By Nelson Dunstan Bold Ruler Impressive Youthful Winner Son of Nasrullah Undefeated to Date Busy Days Ahead for ThreeYearOlds ThreeYearOldsNEW NEW YORK N Y May 3 Bold Ruler defeated a shifty band of twoyearolds in the Youthful and when winning his third race with nary a defeat Jamaica fans may have seen a colt who will be a champion as so many winners of this race have been in the past Bred by the Wheatley Stable and trained by Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons this colt is a dark bay by Nasrullah out of Miss Disco a daughter of Discovery It would be difficult to improve on this breeding and here again we have a horse who like Nashua attests the value of Nas ¬ rullah as an importation to this country Red Cadet a son of Model Cadet has been second to Bold Ruler in his last two starts and he is proving himself a game youngster who may make his presence felt as the season goes on A week ago we inspected Bold Ruler at Aqueduct He is an impressive youngster with the good size common to the sons and daughters of this sire who now stands at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky It is a bit early to make any pre ¬ dictions regarding the twoyearolds but it could be that Bold Ruler will still be going strong when the Futurity and The Garden State come up in the fall fallProvides Provides Early Test of Juvenile Class ClassWhile While the majority of the twoyearolds have yet to make their debuts the Youthful is one of the best yardsticks by which to measure the division To name some of the past winners Man o War Chance Play Vander Pool Battlefield Native Dancer and Summer Tan All went on to distinguish themselves as juve ¬ niles many of them as threeyearolds This event is at five furlongs and that is plenty of distance for the babes at this time of year In fact the youngsters do not move up to six furlongs until the running of the Arlington Lassie and the Arlington Futurity at the famous Chicago track in July This writer has always awaited August racing with the Saratoga Special and the Hopeful to aid us in determining the quality of the division But we repeat the Youthful has had more than its share of winners who went on tp brilliant per ¬ formances later In our reckoning it is the first of the many events of importance importanceThe The Kentucky Derby is no longer the first big test for threeyearolds Actually the sophomore season starts with the running of the Flamingo Florida Derby Louisiana Derby and SantaAnita Derby But the Ken ¬ tucky Derby is the first event for members of this division at one mile and a quarter and it so often points out those who lack the physical quality to go a trying route On Saturday Garden State Park will feature the Delaware Valley Stakes at six furlongs and on May 12 Jamaica will offer the Withers which was inaugurated in 1874 and was a Belmont Park event until this year In transferring the Withers to Jamaica the New York officials lengthened it to one and one eighth miles From that day on the threeyearold division will be a busy one and only the soundest of horses can hope to compete for the many rich prizes offered them The Preakness will be run at Pimlico on May 19 and then the Belmont Stakes on June 16 at Belmont Park By no means does it end there for every major track in the country will be offering rich inducements in the hope of attracting those who will have established their class in the Derby Preakness and Belmont BelmontNashua Nashua Must Go to WorkSaturday WorkSaturdayWhile While greatest interest centers in the eightysecond running of the Kentucky Derby this Saturday the presence of Nashua in the Grey Lag at Jamaica is really something to look forward to in the East Nashua is one of the greatest if not the greatest box office attractions in racing today His defeat at Gulfstream Park caused many to wonder if he will be beaten on the weekend and if so who will accomplish the feat Joe Jones and Find are certain to have their followers while the four victories of Le Beau Prince with no de ¬ feats in this country has made him a factor to be reckoned with Should he win this one he will be one of the most talked about horses ever to be brought to this country Even though he is giving considerable poundage to his opponents this writer is of ihe opinion that Nashua will win In the days of Citation Jimmy Jones the Calumet trainer was wont to say Watch out for the lightlyweighted horses Impasse a recent winner at Jamaica is in with 110 pounds and the much improved War Command has been assigned 108 20 pounds under Jimmy Kilroes impost on Nashua Both may be very dangerous this way weighted
