Sportsmans Park By J J Murphy Illinois Boards Suggestion Praiseworthy Proposes Aid to Olympic Equestrian Team Racing Solidifies AustraliaU S Bond BondSPORTSMANS SPORTSMANS PARK Cicero 111 May 3 Firm in the belief that all horsemen in whatever branch of the sport they may be should lend a helping hand to each other and that racing associa ¬ tions who derive profit indirectly from horses come in the same category the members of the Illinois Racing Board have come up with a suggestipn They sug ¬ gest that a fund subscribed to by all tracks in Illinois be established to assist in defraying the expenses of the United States equestrian team that will participate in the coming Olympic Games The games will be held in Melbourne Australia one of the horsiest cities in the world so it is befitting that this country the leader in importa ¬ tion of racers from foreign lands and in value of purses should be fittingly represented in the only branch of the games having anything to do with the horse The good folk of Melbourne will expect something special from American horses even though they are not thor ¬ oughbreds During therpast quarter century the bond between Australia and the United States has been greatly strengthened through horses Phar Lap was the first of the great Aussies to come to North America then followed several fine stallions including Beau Pere and Bernborough who have greatly added to our breeding stock The Australian riders Sellwood Britt Johnston Moore and others have ridden in this country while Ernest Shaw who brought over Beau Pere for Louis B Mayer became one of our leading trainers trainersMelbourne Melbourne Cup Top Social Turf Event EventMelbourne Melbourne has four race tracks and the greatest of all Australian races the Melbourne Cup is held there each November We are told that while the Cup is being run virtually all work in the nation comes to a standstill so that the populace may follow the running of the affair on the wireless The Cup is the social event of the year and many journey from New Zea ¬ land Tasmania and South Pacific islands to be present for its running The names of the favorites for the event are household words and for weeks before the race their every move is reported in bold type in some of the papers The name of recent Cup favorite Rising Fast a New Zealand horse was so well known that he was referred to in the headlines as R F One writer states that the feeling is still prevalent in New Zea ¬ land and Australia that any lout can buy a car but horses are owned by gentlemen gentlemenJockey Jockey Robert Ford who rode three straight winners here recently including both ends of the Daily Double is another rider on the grounds who obtained his saddle start at Phoenix He is 23 years old and a native of Lingle Wyo Ford like Roy Lumm of whom we wrote recently got his start riding quarter horses in Arizona and also like Lumm made his debut at Phoenix He was the leading rider at Longacres three or four years ago and also rode well at Santa Anita having mounts in several stakes and winning one He came east to Oaklawn Park with the stable of J Kel Houssels and is freelancing at this meeting meetingPimlico Pimlico Reviews History of Preakness PreaknessPerusal Perusal of the recent arrival Pimlico Pictorial calls to mind the fact that George Ellis who has some liorses in training here rode Mate to victory in the Preakness of 1931 beating Twenty Grand Also that George Seabo who rode at the inaugural session here in 1932 won the Preakness in 1939 with Challedon Inci ¬ dentally Ellis who conditions the runners of the B H Stable has sent BUI Boy LiP Mick and Hahar to Fairmount Park A jockey recently departed for Fairmount is Tommy Fico who was unable to obtain enough mounts here Trainer V L Creal left for Fairmount and turned over the horses he had for owner R E Poindexter to John W Beck to condition conditionSpy Spy Defense Gumption and Solvent were arrivals from the farm at Columbus Nebr to augment the stable of Mr and Mrs Marion VanBerg Much regret expressed at the passing of Maywoods track superintendent Joe Harbutt who died of a heart attack Wednesday Mrs Henry L Nathensons fine grass runner Blue Choir is training well at Washington Park and expected to again be one of the stars of the Bal ¬ moral meeting During his visit here crippled ex jockey Herbert Cavalier was presented with a good sized check from the reserve fund of the Illinois Racing Board The Jockeys Guild takes care of most of Cavaliers expenses and hospital treatment Trainer Tom Kelly brought six of Mrs C Silvers large string from Washington for racing here
