Gallant Man Fit and Ready On Scene of Saturday s Race WiU Have Final Workout Tomorrow Bold Ruler May Drill Between Races Today TodayBy By JOE IIIRSCH IIIRSCHCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky April 30 The arrival in Kentucky of Ralph Lowes Gallant Man brilliant sec Derby Doings ond in the recent Wood Memorial highlighted the mornings activities along the backstretch of this storied track as the news tempo of Saturdays 83d Ken ¬ tucky Derby picked up perceptably The days work tab was devoid of candidates for Ameri ¬ cas premier turf prize what with six of the iO prospective starters scheduled for an afternoon engagement in the mile Trial and several of the others due for moves later this week weekGallant Gallant Man actually checked in from New York last night about 6 pm after a threehour plane trip that was relatively uneventful according to trainer Johnny Nerud who displayed the shortcoupled son of Migoli and Majidah for a host of admiring newspapermen under a sunny cloudless sky skyWood Wood Helped Coir CoirHe He came out of the Wood in good con ¬ dition the alert and likeable Nerud ob ¬ served much better than I thought Hes not a horse who can stand the gaff like Gen Duke or Bold Ruler and we have to take it easy with him I think the Wood helped him he may have been a little short for the race because he had never gone a distance of ground before All he had between the Wood and January 30 was the Swift at six furlongs furlongsNerud Nerud who planned to fly back to Aque ¬ duct at noon today to supervise the morn ning preparations of the 27 horses he has in training at the Long Island oval re ¬ ported that Gallant Man would get a final Derby move on Thursday and not very far either The Englishbred colt turned in a highly satisfactory seven furlongs in 130 at New York last Saturday and Johnny feels that if he isnt ready now he isnt going to be Nerud incidentally will be back in Louisville late Wednesday after ¬ noon and witt remain through the week end endGallant Gallant Man merely walked this morn ¬ ing touring the shedrow of Barn 21 where Norman MeMaster has another division of the extensive Lowe string The Midland Texas oilman will be on hand in Louisville later this week while jockey Johnny Choquette is flying from New York and may ride here Friday FridayChoquette Choquette is definitely set on Gallant Man despite the persistent rumors that Willie Shoemaker might wind up with the mount The boy has done well with Gal ¬ lant Man Nerud who once had Teddy Atkinsons book explained He knows the theContinued Continued on Page four i JOCKEY JOHN RALPH ADAMS Is expected to ride Shan Pac in Saturdays Derby and thus may ride against his fcther John Adams Sr who has the mount on Better Bee Gallant Man Fit and Ready On Scene of Saturdays Race Will Have Final Workout Tomorrow Bold Ruler May Drill Between Races Today TodayContinued Continued from Page One Onehorse horse and it would be a dirty shame to switch riders now nowIve Ive noticed that almost every time a horse gets good and they pun a boy off and substitute a name rider the horse usually loses When I had Teddy and he won the Massachusetts Handicap in 1941 with War Relic those people began to realize they had something and pulled Teddy off Well the horse promptly got beat at Saratoga SaratogaAs As for Gallant Man Nerud continued hes a smart horse very adaptable and is easy to rate That and his breeding con ¬ vinces me that hell be able to go a dis ¬ tance of ground And he had the Derby weight of 126 pounds up in the Wood too His best races have been off the pace where he has something to run at I think he can handle an off track He had slop for the Swift and was closing fast at the end Gallant Man is to gallop tomorrow with exercise boy Sonny Dion who flew from New York in the irons ironsAt At Mr Fitz barn the grand old man of American racing was relaxed and in hearty good humor sunning himself in a huge easy chair at the end of the shedrow Bold Ruler who worked a mile and oneeighth in 157 yesterday morning had come out of his move in good order and had gal ¬ loped around the track this morning Mr Pitz leaned over tapped this writer lightly on the head with a rolled newspaper by way of greeting and said that Bold Ruler will probably work between races tomorrow afternoon Hell go fiveeighths of a mile and gallop out threequarters Mr Pitz noted notedThe The old gent who admitted to staying up until 1 20 a jn last night while enjoying a drivein movie thought that hed prob ¬ ably shoe the son of Nasrullah and Miss Disco with stickers if it comes up mud for the Derby Bold Ruler wore them in the Wood and still has them on but Mr Fitz said hed want the colt to be replated replatedWhirlaways Whirlaways Record Secure SecureActually Actually he recalled I once started a horse on a greasy track without shoes on the two front feet and he won by 100 yards And recently Eddie OBrien tried the same thing in New York as a result of the story I told him and his colt won too I even had two dollars on him Those little caulks dont mean much but its the thing to do so I guess well do it itJimmy Jimmy Cpnway on the way to the barn for a final inspection of Mrs Ada L Rices Indian Creek and Man Up Stairs who were to go in this afternoons Trial thought that 202 or 203 would be good enough to win Saturdays Derby at a mile and one quarter Conway reemphasized that in his opinion Churchill Downs was a good track to train over before running and was sup ¬ ported in his remarks by jockey George Taniguchi who accompanied them The astute California reinsman a youngster of unusual intelligence and perception added that a speed horse could get tired over this strip if he wasnt familiar with it itDown Down the shedrow from Bold Ruler Round Table is housed assistant trainer Jack Williams observed as he has through the week that this Derby shapes up as one of the toughest in many years Its par ticularly rough in view of the two good colts that Calumet will throw at us he said saidRound Round Table Works Today TodayYou You dont know where to lay If you try to run with Iron Liege then Gen Duke comes along and runs you down in the stretch when youre out of gas Were for ¬ tunate in one respect however in that we have an experienced rider in Ralph Neves Hes been around a long time and knows what to do in big money races racesWilliams Williams revealed that Round Table will work threequarters of a mile tomorrow probably in the afternoon vto acquaint him with the Churchill Downs strip as it is under actual racing conditions The son of Princequillo and the Irish Knights daugh ¬ ter is attracting increasing support for Saturdays race among hardboot horsemen who like his bloodlines and the way he carried his speed in the Blue Grass at Keeneland KeenelandAt At barn 11 Del Carroll was grazing his good twoyearold Rellim S W a winner yesterday and remarked at the growing importance of winter racing in the present scheme of things Better Bees trainer noted that seasoning helps quite a bit when a horse is going a mile and onequarter this early in the year and that every one of the present Derby probables had com ¬ peted in Florida or California jn recent months monthsAs As for Better Bee the youthful Carroll thought that his colt was coming up to the Trial and the Derby in excellent condition and that the strapping son of Triplicate and SBee bred like Count Fleet could be expected to give a good account of himself This could be an underrated horse he ran a mile and onesixteenth at Gulfstream in his last out in the recordequalling time of 142 142Passing Passing the Hasty House barn the writer met trainer Harry Trotsek generally recog ¬ nized as one of the most capable horsemen on the American turf Just returned from a flying trip to Florida to visit Tiis family and his doctor Trotsek estimated that 202 would probably get the job done Saturday Few liorsemen weve canvassed believe that Whirlaways record of 201 set in 1941 Nis in danger despite the preponderance of recordbreaking performances turned in by this years sophomores sophomoresIn In another development it appears as though Willie Shoemaker wont have a mount in this years Derby Yesterday he took himself off the mount on Mrs Ada Rices Pamper Me in Fridays Kentucky Oaks and while he still has an opportunity to ride T Alie Grissoms Shan Pac it doesnt appear as though he will so avail himself In that event which is considered most likely J Ralph Adams will be aboard the Shannon IE colt and thus will be com ¬ peting against his father Johnny Adams the pilot of Better Bee BeeBold Bold Ruler was paddocked between the first and second races this afternoon and behaved beautifully in front of an admiring crowd His trainer completely stole the show however Mr Fitz tipping his hat graciously to a host of ladies who asked him to pose for pictures with the big colt
