1 1 On the Trot TrotBy By MORRIE KUKLANSKY 1 1Mondays Mondays Program Huge Success Fitzpatrick Scores Neat Triple Two Season Marks High Handle HandleMAYWOOD MAYWOOD PARK Maywood 111 April 30 Monday nights 10race program orig ¬ inally carded for Saturday night proved a huge success in spite of the postponement While the racing was highlighted by an im m e n s e 1 y impressive triple victory of the sensational Jimmy Fitzpatrick a mere baby in comparison to the average age of the nations leading sulky pilots and two seasons records established by two of Jimmys win ¬ ning mounts Sea Eagle and Major Hoot the crowd poured 341993 through the mu tuel windows for the highest handle ever registered here on a Monday night nightSquat Squat powerful Jimmy Fitzpatrick whose daring manner of driving in the past lias cost him some severe suspen ¬ sions which almost threatened the con ¬ tinuation of his sulky career has sim ¬ mered down quite a bit and it is all for the better A master of the waiting race as well as an excellent judge of pace Jimmy offered some prime examples of superb reinsmanship in each of the three races he won so convincingly on Monday night With eight victories out of 10 starts the young man who of course had a great teacher in his father Harry Fitzpatrick catapulted into fifth place in the Maywood driver standings just three wins behind the joint leaders Joe Light hill and Erward Morgan MorganJimmys Jimmys hat trick was scored with three horses owned by C M Saunders of Perrys burg Ohio and trained by his father who in harness racing occupies a similarly venerable position as James Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons in thoroughbred racing even if he is not quite as old as Bold Rulers trainer The Californiabred trotting filly Onyx provided Jimmys first winning mount Responding gamely to her drivers demands the Bjutler daughter easily over ¬ took the leading Little Oty and Jerry Pro ¬ duct in the short homestretch for a 210 victory victoryJimmys Jimmys next mount was the fiveyear old pacing gelding Sea Eagle who was coupled in the wagering with K D Owens Scotchlite to form a powerful en ¬ try in the fivehorse f ie3 of the featured handicap pace Scotchlite driven by Howard Beissingcr actually was respon sible for the entrys evenmoney favor ¬ itism itismIf If Sea Eagle had been entered on his own against Scotchlite Miss Creedabelle Jake Rodney and Hundred Proof to name the starters he most likely would have been the outsider in the small band as he was soundly beaten in his Maywood Park debut nine days ago Whatever the stables intentions were as to which of the two should win the race it turned out differ ¬ ently than the fans expected but none of the pairs supporters had reason to grumble as they finished onetwo onetwoJake Jake Rodney was allowed to set the pace for the first fiveeighths when Scotchlite forged ahead hearing the quarter pole while Sea Eagle had beaten only one horse at that point Scotchlite maintained a narrow advantage to mid stretch but could not withstand Sea Eagles late burst of speed Miss Creeda ¬ belle and Jake Rodney finished in a dead heat for third place two and a half lengths behind the winner and three quarters of a length in front of Hundred Proof Sea Eagles time of 202 was the fastest registered this year over a half mile track in this country countryJimmy Jimmy followed this triumph with an equally brilliant victory with Major Hoot in the cofeatured Aclass trot Shepards Crusader followed by Nelson K set a blistering pace for more than half a mile but Jimmy was unruf f led and did not make an attempt to catch the leaders until less than threeeighths to go At the quarter pole Major Hoot was still three lengths be ¬ hind the leading pair Turning for home Nelson K replaced Shepards Crusader in the lead but Major Hoot trotting at his best speed unleashed a burst of speed that carried him past the Illinois trotter within a few yards Brightside Farms Moray taken away very cautiously by Bob Parkin ¬ son also finished very fast but could not reach Major Hoot who won by a neck over the fouryearold timed in 2 05 for a new seasons record bettering Tag Mes mark by onefifth of second
