Weighing In I By EYan Sipman Schwartz Familys Good Racer Applauded Nah Hiss Beats Time of Excelsior Winner Gamester Has Promising Future in Stakes StakesJAMAICA JAMAICA L I N Y April 30 From the point of view of the local press box no victory could have been more popular than Nah Hiss score in yesterdays fea ¬ tured race the mile and a six ¬ teenth Merrick Purse Jules Schwartz and his wife breeders and owners of this excellent three yearold son of Call Over Way mark by Nedayr have long been on such friendly terms with each and every member of the frater ¬ nity hereabouts that we can re ¬ joice in their good fortune almost as if it were our own Many re spectable platers including Nah Hiss dam the honest Waymark have carried the colors of the Metropolitan circuits cleanup man but this attractive big bay colt is their first campaigner of stakes calibre and so good and sharp is he right now that in any but this extraor ¬ dinary year of threeyearold quality Nah Hiss would have earned a strong following for such classic engage ments as the Kentucky Derby Preakness and Belmont Stakes As it is the smoothly turned big fellow falls just short of a ranking in the top tier although with yesterdays cleancut score easily the best showing of his brief public career one must hesitate before deny ¬ ing the colt the possibility of still further improvement Sentiment aside this is a good one a rugged sound individual with a future that will bear careful watching watchingTenacious Tenacious Offered No Challenge ChallengeN N Pointed out by an earlier win at the expense of worthwhile company Nah Hiss started yesterday at even money his only rival in the small field to receive any serious backing being Joe W Browns Tenacious Actually the real running hardly involved the chestnut colt from New Orleans Tenacious stopping to a walk in the stretch after pressing the early pace set by Assemblyman and the fouryearold Trodden Way The latter pair however more than compensated for Tenacious defection chalking up an initial mile in 137 flat over the rather deep and dull Jamaica strip and forcing the strongly urged choice to complete the trip in a noteworthy 143 as he eventually caught and bested them by open daylight daylightSome Some recent results including stakes and notably last Saturdays Excelsior Handicap must be accepted with the reservation that a careful breakdown of frac tional times shows ratings bordering on the fantastic Several of our leading riders must blush for shame when the cold testimony of the watch indicates the degree to which they were hoodwinked by a deliberately false pace these veterans falling neatly into the trap set for them We bring this up for the moment only to emphasize the absence of any such reproach where Nah Hiss is concerned No the Call Over colts pleasing success was regularity itself classic in its simplicity Running as if teamed Assemblyman and Trodden Way the latter fouryearold enjoying according to the scale of weights for April a sevenpound weight advantage over Nah Hiss tripped off the poles in AQVs for the half 112 for the six panels and as mentioned above 137 flat for the mile An overall comparison with Midafternoons Excelsior reveals that Nah Hiss carrying one pound over scale to Midafter ¬ noons scale completed the distance in 143 as against the older horses 143 Too much of course can easily be made of any such mechanical compari ¬ sons but as a point of reference in this particular case we are ready to accept the testimony of the watch with few if any reservations reservationsUssery Ussery Calls for Everything EverythingWhen When the intensely engaged pair Assemblyman and Trodden Way rounded the final bend they were lead ing Nah Hiss by three and masbe four lengths In the event of fainthearted pacemakers an advantage of that sort means little but far from coming back to their field this pair appeared to find new resources as the distance separating them from the wire dimin ¬ ished Jockey Bob Ussery W fs plainly riding Nah Hiss hard but if he was gaining on the leaders through the upper stretch it was imperceptible Always a generous colt Nah Hiss was giving his best the effort accentu ¬ ating a rough gait that is by the way his least appeal ¬ ing characteristic As close as the furlong pole the favorites case still appeared hopeless but now Ussery was plying his whip cutting hard and with his ears pinned tight to his head Nah Hiss was responding to punishment closing the stubborn gap gapRight Right at the endf endfNah Nah Hiss resolution earned its reward His margin over Trodden Way that one and a halflength to the good of Assemblyman was an in ¬ dicative length and a half the drive separating this trio from the remnant of the field by a wide margin Reverting to last year we recalled the first positive impression made by the Schwartz familys colorbearer It was here at Jamaica and Nah Hiss on this occasion defeated a colt from Hirsch Jacobs barn for whom we had a high regard the gray Promised Land We were loathe to call that race true invoking several plausible excuses for the gray Palestinian colt but that result was correct and we were wrong Another encounter this spring only affirmed Nah Hiss superiority while we believe that his pedigree suggests late maturity
