Of Going to Post Declares Jones Gallant Man Works WorksBy By JOE HIRSCII HIRSCIICHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 2 With the racing secretarys office packed to capacity with horsemen agents riders turf writers photographers televi ¬ sion cameramen and assorted onlookers entries closed at 945 this morning for Sat ¬ urdays momentous 83rd Kentucgy Derby over the historic Downs course The names of 10 horses passed through the box ac ¬ companied by a 250 fee but the status of one of this excellent group of three yearolds Calumets Gen Duke who re ¬ cently suffered a bruise of the left front foot was definitely uncertain according to his trainer H A Jimmy Jones JonesIronically Ironically enough Gen Duke drew the sigificant rail position with the others in order including John Appelbaums Mister Jive Clifford Lusskys Federal Hill Kerr Stables Round Table Ralph Lowes Gallant Man Mrs Ada L Rices Indian Creek Calumets Iron Liege Wheatley Stables Bold Ruler T Alie Grissoms Shan Pac and William S Millers Better Bee All will carry scale weight of 126 pounds over the one and onequarter Derby route routeNet Net Purse of 109200 to Winner WinnerIf If all entrants go to the post the Derby will be worth 153300 with the winners net share amounting to 109200 or some 14150 less than Needles got in 1956 1956Incidentally Incidentally every one of the 10 possible starters has set or equaled a track rec ¬ ord at some point during his career a situation unparalleled in Derby history historyThe The attitude at the Calumet barn con ¬ cerning Gen Dukes condition was not nearly so optimistic this morning as it was yesterday T would have to say that he has something less than a 5050 chance of starting in the race Jones told this reporter reporterWe We will probably not be certain until Saturday he continued and it is pos ¬ sible that he may not be declared until the legal 45 minutec before the Derby We would certainly like to run him but we arent going to do anytihng that might in jure him seriously If he doesnt go Satur ¬ day ve fully expect lie will be ready for the Preakriess at Pimlico on May 18 18Jones Jones put a bar shoe on Gen Dukes in ¬ jured foot during the midmorning and the colt was again examined by his attend ¬ ing veterinarian Dr Alex Harthill The harassed trainer who admits hes slept little during the past couple of nights had the handsome son of Bull Lea and Wistful out grazing on a nearby field and turned him in a narrow circle a few times Gen Duke wheeled willingly without a visible lame step and Jones thinks the bar shoe has helped him somewhat somewhatJimmy Jimmy revealed that he has temporarily discontinued the hot whirlpool foot baths The General has been receiving since yes terday morning since the warm water has a tendency to soften the hoof Jones is using every means at his disposal and drawing upon the long experience that he and his father Ben Jones have had with similar injuries to get Gen Duke ready in inContinued Continued from Page One Onetime time for the Derby However time seems to be against him N NThis This is a condition which could clear up overnight Jimmy explained If we can localize the dark spot which showed up on yesterdays xray we could probe for and draw out any pus tWat may be there On the other hand this may be an injury which will never localize localizeThere There Is a possibility that this is a blind quarter crack deep in the hoof or a mi ¬ nute piece of gravel which has worked its way up between the wall of the hoof and the meaty part Its difficult to fix an exact diagnosis the patient cant tell us much muchQuestion Question of Riders RidersJones Jones said that if Gen Duke doesnt run and the injury is nothing more than a stone bruise as is strongly suspected then the colt will remain with the stable and train on for the Preakness Jimmy didnt name any riders for Gen Duke and Iron Liege this morning and it is possible that Willie Hartack would ride Iron Liege in place of Dave Erb should The General i be declared declaredI I There were several other important de velopments in the kaleldioscopic Derby pic j ture which has had an army of newsmen hopping like the proverbial onearmed pa perhanger First trainer Woody Stephens declared Gain Hoys OneEyed King who t worked yesterday and was considered a j possible Stephens was unable to contact owner Harry F Guggenheim in New York late last night but said this morning that I the others aie too tough for us at this time timej j Second Mister Jive arrived by plane j from New Jersey and was bedded down 1 at Barn 16 beWeen Round Table and Bold Ruler at approximately 1120 a m He was accompanied by corowner Verne Martin who like Appelbaum is a Canadian and trainer George Bud Carter whose age j of 26 makes him one of the youngest men ever to saddle a starter for Americas blue ribband of the turf turfI I Carters youth is also in sharp contrast with that of his nearest neighbor 82year old Jim Fitzsimmons the dean of Ameri ¬ can conditions Carter planned to gallop Mister Jive after the last race today and probably work him a good fiveeights of a j mile Friday morning morningJ J Ralph Adams Thrown ThrownThird Third jockey J Ralph Adams sched ¬ uled to ride Shan Pac was thrown in the saddling enclosure aboard James L Pad ¬ docks Antebabe before the start in the second race and rushed to St Marys Hos ¬ pital in Louisville with a badly bruised rib There was no word on the extent of the injury at 3 p m Fourth Gallant Mans trainer Johnny Nerud returned from a flying trip to New York Wednesday night and worked the son of Migoli and Majidah a half mile this morning Gallant Mans clocking of 47 was the fastest on the tab and was par ¬ ticularly eyecatching in view of the fact that the colt broke off at the sevenfurlong pole which means that it was accomplished around two turns Gallant Mans brilliant speed was at least partially responsible for his fine showing in the recent Wood Me ¬ morial and todays work demonstrated that he has lost little condition from his trip south southA A hasty round of the other Derby barns this morning produced the following infor ¬ mation Federal Hill will blow out three eighths of a mile Friday morning and trainer Milt Rieser reports that he appears to be in excellent condition Willie Car stens will be up in the morning and will ride him back on Saturday Round Table galloped this morning and will blow out a slow quarter of a mile Saturday morning Ralph Neves will ride Better Bee will also blow out lightly on Saturday morning and is in fine shape The Tripli ¬ cate colt who could be in the money on Saturday afternoon will be handled by the veteran Johnny Adams AdamsGallant Gallant Mans owner Ralph Lowe is due here by plane this afternoon from his home in Midland Texas Nerud noted that while he regretted Johnny Choquettes suspen ¬ sion he was pleased that he had a rider with Derby experience in Willie Shoemaker Mr Fitz said that he was satisfied with Bold Rulers fine six panels in 111 ys yes ¬ terday afternoon I wanted him to hit the track hard and have confidence that he can handle the surface when he runs Sat ¬ urday said Fitzsimmons BoldRuler was paddocked again this afternoon Jimmy Conway reports that Indian Creek is IiTtop shape and will blow out threeeighths to ¬ morrow morning Hell go slow said Con way Hes fit now nowMister Mister Jives coowner Martin turned put to be a pleasant gentleman of tall stature and middle age who purchased the colt with a group of others for Canadian mine developer Applbaum who incidentally is ill at home and may miss the race We had two young horses by Mr Music re ¬ called Martin while waiting at the barn for Mister Jives arrival from the airport John pointed a long cigar at Mister Jive and said thats the one I want
