Swoons Son Impressive in 57 Bow BowN N Equableu Jamaica Winner by Length Perfectly Timed Move by Atkinson AtkinsonVets Vets Boy Garners Second Straight Purse of Meeting In Days Companion Event EventBy By BOB HORWOOD HORWOODJAMAICA JAMAICA L I N Y May 2 Making a perfectly timed move on the outside turn ¬ ing for home Ted Atkinson got Woolford Farms Equableu to the finish of the first of todays claiming features a length before Lottie Wolfs Top Value Elmendorfs Clas ¬ sic Music was a half length farther back and almost a length before Mrs Ben F Whitakers Spanish Queen who was fa ¬ vored over the winner by the throng of 20704 that turned out in lovely spring weather Equableu required 113 for the six furlongs over the fast but deep and tring track and paid 780 as second choice choiceThe The sevenyearold Equableu was scor ¬ ing her first victory of the year on the seventh attempt but most of her defeats have been against somewhat better com ¬ pany than she was facing today The vic ¬ tory kept Atkinson in a tie with Raul Sterling for the local jockey leadership the youngster having won the second race on MauMau and they had 21 winners each through this sixth event eventFlitter Flitter Girl Opens Up Lead LeadFlitter Flitter Girl went to the front at the start of the first of the modest features opening a three length lead over Spanish Queen in the run to the far turn while Equableu was a couple of lengths father back but going along smoothly Flitter Girl continued to lead into the stretch but was obviously beginning to tire as was Spanish Queen while Equableu loomed on the outside with a bid that was clearly going to take care of the leaders However Top Val ¬ ue and Classic Music also began to close ground rapidly and for a few strides ap ¬ peared menacing In the final yards Equa j bleu responded to Atkinsons urging to i draw awayr while Top Value outfinished Classic Music as Spanish Queen faded out of the money Flitter Girl finished a weary fifth fifthThe The second of these featured 10000 down to 8000 sprints went to Edward Seinfelds Vets Boy under a hustling ride by Willie Lester After duelling for the lead with Viking Victory Vets Boy shook i off that rival at the final turn and drew out to score by almost two lengths over Barclay Stables True Butts who led Clara L strikers favored Native Son by an ¬ other two lengths Edward Siravos Sandy Dandy finished a length out of the money Vets Boy returned 820 and was tele timed a respectable 112 112Native Native Son was in close quarters along the rail throughout most of this dash while Vets Boy had clear sailing on the outside of Viking Victory who stopped back to sixth place at the end with only Man of Destiny who trailed all the way behind him Time Butts was always in contention but was no match for the winner who was scoring his second straight here and won seven races last yeai yeaiAn An unusual mishap for which Jockey Club Steward Marshall Cassidy accepted full responsibility occurred after the sec ¬ ond race After the race had been declared official it wa announced that jockey Ro gelio Trejos who had finished fourth on Poplar Branch had claimed a foul against Robert Stovall who had finished second on Jay Ran Cassidy said that Trejos had had difficulty in pulling up his horse and was late coming back to the scales where he lodged his foul claim The veteran steward said that he had automatically pressed the button making the race official when re ¬ ceiving word from the clerk of scales that the weights were correct though he had been aware of Trejos claim of foul Fortu ¬ nately the patrol films made it clear that Poplar Branch bore in as badly as JaysRan came dut with both horses being equally at fault Had there actually been a foul the result would have had to stand once the race had been declared official HERBERT M WOOLF Equableu car ¬ ried the Kansafcitians colors to victory in the Lefferts Purse at Jamaica
