Weighing In ly EYIH Shipman Bolero U Brings Fine Form From Miamj Wins Youthful Following Brisk Struggle Waller Possesses Skill as Conditioner ConditionerJAMAICA JAMAICA L I N Y May 2 Before the running of yesterdays Youthful first of the Metropolitan cir ¬ cuits many stakes for twoyearolds it was generally conceded that J L McKmghts leggy chestnut Bolero U had the kind of foot that tops sum ¬ maries in the abbreviated dashes that the winter tracks offer for this division the real question being as to how this precocious youngster would comport himself around a turn and through the extra furlong now being demanded of him Only a half dozen con ¬ temporaries came out to try con ¬ clusions with the lathy and rather spare son of Bolero from the Challedon mare Big Lu but these included several such as Mrs A J Ostrikers Stymie colt Nisht Amool the Mill River Stables State Express and E Lowrances gray Wine Jr who defi ¬ nitely outlooked the favorite when studied on the walk ¬ ing ring The solid bouncy State Express also appeared there as a particularly attractive model Concerning the latter who had scored for both his debut at the cur ¬ rent meeting and in a subsequent outing trainer Tom Waller said He has proved that he has the speed and he is hard and fit as you can see but well learn in a few minutes now whether he also possesses a touch of class Rambunctious with the high spirits of youth while being saddled State Express was still jumpy and on edge at the gate delaying the start briefly as he broke through The small field was well bunched as the flag dropped but shortly thereafter a trio composed of the gray colt Wine Jr Nisht Amool and Bolero U sprinted to a clear lead of some half a dozen lengths the re ¬ maining quarter including the now completely sub ¬ dued State Express taking little or no part in pro ¬ ceedings then or later Over a strip decidedly dead judging from the performances offered by more fami ¬ liar campaigners Wine Jrr carried his two close rivals to the half in 47 flat none of them capable of detach ¬ ing themselves even under hard urging from their riders Three Jockeys 3o All Out OutAll All three jockeys Johnny Choquette aboard Bolero U Eddie Arcaro on the oddly named Nisht Amool and BobUssery wi h the pacesetting Wine Jr had their mounts under a frank drive from the time they reached the upper stretch and it was only after passing the furlong pole that they staggered a halflength apart with Bolero U now leading Nisht Amool and Wine Jr In short order the gray finally threw in the sponge leaving the rangy chestnut and the typically compact sturdy son of Stymie to fight it out between them Here was where the winterraced Bolero U estab ¬ lished his claim to being considerably more than a morning glory Nisht Amool pressed him hard finish ¬ ing out in agreeable style but the favorite is fortunate in being stubborn as well as quick having no intention of forfeiting the lead it had cost him such a prolonged effort to establish At the wire in an acceptable con ¬ sidering the strips condition 100 the final verdict was Bolero U by open daylight over Nisht Amool the latter sixlengths to the good of the thoroughly weary gray Whether this group will continue to merit close attention once the important stables uncover their latest developments is another matter but for the time being Bolero U looks like the one the more fashionable latecomers will have to beat beatReverting Reverting to State Express a name that bears a suspicious resemblance to a wellknown English brand of cigarettes and his two victories here at the first and second asking by the way time in 59 flat and the swiftest five panels of the monthold meeting you will find him merely one of many with whom the talented Viriginia horseman Tom Waller has visited the win ¬ ners circle wasting no time with what are politely termed conditioning races This large and well stocked barn with a strong contingent racing in Mary ¬ land as well as here at Long Island has achieved some kind of record this spring for winning at the first crack out of the box there being nothing of the fluke about such a performance when it repeats itself six or seven times within the space of a few weeks weeksTrue True Veterans Had One Thing in Common CommonTrainers Trainers of an earlier day prided themselves on their ability to prepare a horse for a specific engage ¬ ment sending their charges to the post in form that could not be improved upon Mr Fife Max Hirsch and Carey Winfrey belong to that school Mr Fitz for in ¬ stance during the time that he wintertrained here on the island having five renewals of the curtainraising Paumonok Handicap to his credit This is an acconi plishment usually associated with betting stables for obvious reasons and it explains why a special measure of skill is demanded in the conduct of a successful betting barn such as those of such training wizards of another day as Sam Hildreth John Rogers James Rowe and Andrew Jackson Joyner Curiously enough neither Waller nor any of the several owners for whom the Viriginian trains place any importance on the wa ¬ gering side of the sport a token 10 to 20 completely satisfying their appetite for play
