Columbia Training Track Being Renovated by City CityMove Move to Insure Continuance of Winter Thoroughbred Operation OperationCOLUMBIA COLUMBIA S C May 2 Earthmov ¬ ing equipment of the City of Columbia began work Monday on the renovation of the mile training track at the state fair grounds on this citys edge Although civic minded parties pleaded with both the city andRichland County to furnish equipment and labor needed to put a new pan under the tracks sandy surface city officials de ¬ cided to do the job alone aloneThe The city council gave the goahead and put M W Roper chief of the streets divi ¬ sion of the city public works department in charge of the project City Manager Irving G McNayr reported that the only cost to the citys taxpayers would be the labor since the city already owns all of the necessary equipment He termed the expense a very worthwhile one oneMrs Mrs Marian Tad Legere coowner of the Columbia training stables where some 200odd thoroughbreds have trained each winter for the past 25 years said before leaving for New York earlier this month that she would operate here next year only if the track was properly reconditioned in time to allow it to settle before the horses return in October OctoberThis This prompted the appearance before council of several civic groups who pointed out that Columbia benefits from the esti ¬ mated quartermillion dollar payroll of the stables and the national publicity that re ¬ sults from the stables presence here The work will be completed this week
