discussions being in vogue these days stylish Laurel keeps pace by serving breakfast twice weekly to those of the training profession and once weekly to members of the press Executive vicepresident and secretary Jo ¬ seph T Cascarella serves as the moderator and provides interest ¬ ing and sometimes heated sub ¬ ject matter Several of the scribes were heading Louisville way and Bill Boniface of the Baltimore Sun papers did not make an ap pearance But among the early morning gourmets were Joe Bio cator Washington Post and Times Herald Charlie Lanb Baltimore News Post Snowden Carter Baltimore Evening Sun Palmer Heagerty DAILY RACING FORM Joe Kelly Washington Evening Star Bill Jaeger and Al Cadeaux of the Laurel pub ¬ licity staff The Kentucky Derby of course was the main topic but many other things were discussed from selling peanuts to battleships Youre on the ear earLamb Lamb That was alarming news at first about Gen Duke It sort of makes it a wideopen race and I guess Round Table will get a lot of play Now Ill bet Ben Jones is sorry he did not try to get Barbizon ready for the Derby instead of training him so lightly during the winter winterWreath Wreath of Roses for Iron Liege LiegeHeagerty Heagerty Dont feel too sorry for Jones Iron Liege has been his best horse right along so far as I am concerned and Im looking for him to get the money He is a better horse than his races in Florida indicate but I cant quite understand why he raced so poorly in the Derby Trial The stories say he tried to get out I hope theres nothing hurting him himCarter Carter I sort of favor Bold Ruler They seem to forget that he bea Gen Duke in the Flamingo and that hevcracked the track record last week at Jamaica Mr Fitz doesnt make many mistakes And Arcaro will be up and hes always the best rider when theyre hanging out a hundred grand grandJaeger Jaeger How about Round Table The Caliente future book has him as the second choice His race in the Blue Grass was brilliant and it appears as ifhe has come up to the race in perfect style Therell be a lot of California money backing him too He cant be ignored ignoredBrocator Brocator You all seem to be passing the possiblev winner Federal Hill Hes established himself as the best miler in America and his trainer believes he is better now than he was in Florida FloridaCasearella Casearella Ive got to go along with Joe Federal Hill is good now He wasnt at his best in Florida and when he tossed his rider in his race prior to the Fla ¬ mingo he knocked his training schedule out of whack Milton Rieser has had a chance to get him sharp and he is sharp sharpKelly Kelly The race could be made to order for a come frombehind horse like Iron Liege You may see Round Table Federal Hill and Bold Ruler lock in an early battle tHatll killem off and that last quarter of a mile can get to be a long way off to a horse that has already raced a mile in 135 and some change changeRacing Racing Elsewhere on Saturday Too TooCascarella Cascarella Whos giving this breakfast Laurel or Churchill Downs Were having a meeting here you know and weve got a stake coming up Saturday SaturdayHeagerty Heagerty Whats the name of the stake stakeCascarella Cascarella It isnt the Derby DerbyHeagerty Heagerty I still like Iron Liege The race may be made to order for him himCarter Carter What about your handicapping contest Six ¬ teen winners in two days or two perfect days nets the winner a 5000 bond Are we eligible eligibleCascarella Cascarella No it isnt open to professional handi cappers cappersHeagerty Heagerty What do you mean professional handi cappers Those guys who pick up this paper and study it all night are the real pros Theyre the ones who make the favorites and they usually know more than the owners trainers and jocks Theyre the pros Were amateurs amateursCadeaux Cadeaux This ought to be open to me for Im still eligible for the Double bug I agree with Heagerty I was a good handicapper until I became pro as you call it When you get smart you get dumb in this business You start searching for angles and you lose sight of the important fundamentals of handicapping handicappingLaurel Laurel Down Under like it Jimmy OBrey is splitting his stable between Pimlico and Garden State Albert J Lacoste shipped to New England from Bowie but is back on the Maryland scene with a hard ¬ hitting stable His charge Aero Command from the Grieve Hall Stable wasnt good enough for Wine Jr at Lincoln Downs but proved too much for the colts and geldings who Jfaced him here the other day Venomous next Boston Doge and Pine Echo EchoI I wonder if the Maryland Racing Com ¬ mission or the track stewards would not be wise to follow the pattern of some of the other states in banning cold water bandages in the paddock You will ob ¬ serve that they seldom can be seen unless the horses are competing in claiming races and they are unsightly and cause many turf patrons to avoid backing what turn out to be solid horses Actually they do not fool any of the haltermen are of little or no benefit to the horse and create a ter ¬ rible illusion to the public They were banned several years ago on the
